Am I right in assuming that since all my friends are dead and all my relatives are suffering dementia you do not want "A Dog's Best Friend"? Think of the honor of saying in the credits, "This story first appeared in the October 1984 issue of Mike Shayne Mystery Magazine." Or perhaps you are thinking of it. Or could it be that you have something against dogs? Surely you are not discriminating against murder, blood on the pages and other interesting stuff like that, are you?

I do want "A Dog's Best Friend"! Please send it with a brief bio of 30-40 words. "Or perhaps you are thinking of it." All the time. "Or could it be that you have something against dogs?" I was attacked by an Alsatian when I was four but I think I'm just about over it. Discriminating? Is this word in the dictionary?

Thirty to forty words? On my bio that barely gets you past the day I was born. I had to open my big mouth and now I've added even more work to my already overloaded schedule. OK, I'll do it, but only because you asked. Did your father shoot the Alsatian? As for that word, all my words are in the dictionary. My dictionary.

I'll look forward to receiving it! The Alsatian was put down after I had a couple of stitches in my head. I've never been the same since. Just think, had I not suffered that vicious attack and the brain injury that went with it, I might now be a best-selling, award winning author. Oh well, such is fate.

I'll send on a short bio if any of my work is accepted.
Going to post up the submissions on a writers site I'm a member of. |

| Hmm, Shelagh, I don't see the name "Watkins" on the list. How are you doing in terms of word counts and contributors. Do you need twice this much, a little more, or what?

Shelagh, I have a poem, and have whittled it down to 30 lines if you don't count the spaces between stanzas. I think it is called couplets. Do I need to count the spaces as lines? ( I have always been verbose!)

| Don't fell badly; my poem is 34 lines. (Insert Smiley with scissors here) I can probably cut 2 lines, but it's still too long. I never thought about counting the spaces between the verses (or whatever it's called); in that case, it's about 48-50 lines. ouch.

If you can keep your bio to between 30-40 words, I might be able to squeeze the poem onto a page. Send it anyway and I'll see if it will go onto a single page.

Thanks, Shelagh. I will send you the poem right now, and see what you think. I can probably keep my bio short.

Short story writers--stand and be counted--page counted, that is. If the anthology is comprised mostly of one page poetry as the trend seems to indicate, the printed book may be little more than a pamphlet. So every short story writer who so far is reluctant to submit, get on the ball--or the keyboard. Jim Woods [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I have a few short stories that might apply to the anthology's theme, but they're between 5,000-6,000 words. And that's after editing them down. I don't want to lose the integrity of the story plot or characters, but something's got to go to meet the 4M max word count. I'd be glad to throw out the Bio in favor of my fic/poem, tho'. --Melinda

Hi, me again, Okay, pulled out one of my many times rejected short stories of 6,000+ words and managed to chop it down to 4,970 (at least, according to my MSWord program). I might be able to get rid of a fw hundred more words. How many submissions can we send? If it's one per member, I'll put this story aside for later. It's part of my angel fic, and might not be suitable anyway. Let me know. Thanks. --Melinda

I also noted that, Jim. I am working on a short story now, in case Shelagh prefers that to my poem (I am not a poet, anyway!) I know she is getting at least one more short from another member, and hopefully more will come in, since we have until August.

Have to leave for a few hours to take Hubby and father-in-law (my Dad passed away several years ago) to dinner. I'll go over the story once more and check for typos that Spell Check misses, and then send it to you. Thanks, Shelagh :-) --Melinda

Jim, When I get around to it I'm going to send Shelagh a story that was published in 1984 in Mike Shayne Mystery Magazine. I have no idea how many words are in "A Dog's Best Friend" but it will fill up a few pages. It's that 30-40 word bio that's got me stumped. Maybe: Born, grew up, worked hard, got married, so far hasn't died.

I haven't offered a bio yet; waiting for the editor to give me the go-ahead on the story. But do you suppose the bio could be fiction too? Jim

Oh, Jim, your story was accepted immediately! Please send a bio. Dick, I asked for 30-40 words because otherwise I would receive half a page!
