| Just a reminder - PA still owns the layout design. I've never used a PDF converter, so I don't know how much of the formatting gets converted, but you will want to remove any formatting, just in case they put in something beyond standard. KDP and Createspace will probably need for you to do that anyway.
Shelagh would have better advice, if she could reach us. Hopefully, not much longer before she's set up again. |

| David is right, Alice - just remember that thing about the layout design claim that PA is making. I doubt that there is anything in the standard format they could claim, but you might want to make sure. |

| Not every pdf can be converted. Some publishers export to a pdf format with all fonts outlined rather than embedded. There is no real text, just character images. They do that to ensure that the printing process does not apply the wrong font data.
Good luck with it.

| For the record, I just downloaded the PDF sent to me by PA 7 years ago into Calibre, and it seems, at this point, to have downloaded perfectly. I haven't tried to do anything with it - I am so out of my league here.
I generally find Calibre very scary, because I see screens of stuff that to me, are utter nonsense. I do not know how to read them or what to do with them. And I totally freak out.
All i can say is that i can read the PDF word for word, format accurate, etc.
If those of you, like Al, who do know what you are talking about, are willing to help, maybe we can use this as a test case.
I am preparing my "unformatted text" on my own, but we might all be able to learn something useful here.

Al, You are so right. Thank you. I have asked PA to return my files-- wish me luck. |
