| One-- Stop tax breaks to the rich. Two-- Stop borrowing money for wars. Three--Stop foreign aide --we don't have anything to give anyone.
Mind our own business. Learn to speak Chinese. |

| New idea--England is our parent land. We will go home and repent of our running away. We can have health care and everything. We won't be worn out by the news media critiquing the monarchy. Now I am thinking:) |

| You're right Dave, it explains some of it. It must be recognized that it was Wall Street Financial Institutions that started the downfall and it spread worldwide. Easy Credit is the main culprit. Anyone living in the USA most likely received numerous offers for Credit cards even when they were not credit-worthy. Many ran up bills and then used the second credit card to make the payment on the first one. This escalated until all cards were maxed-out and then they defaulted. This is not to say that it didn't happen in Europe, however getting a credit card is not so easy while at the same time, many still don't have Credit Cards and prefer to pay cash. There are still restuarants and small hotels that don't accept Credit Cards. Remember Home Depot? It began with Cash and Carry, then they began accepting credit cards.
Many are pointing to Europe trying to make them the scapegoat when they have only to look in a mirror if they want to be honest. Joe mentioned Greece and Spain. Easy credit for the government is one reason they have caved-in. The second thing concerning Greece is that many citizens didn't pay taxes. In addition, the government continued to pay unemployment and retirement funds to hundreds of thousands of people who were already dead. No accountability. When Obama wants to regulate financial institutions, the Repubs complain. Free-wheeling without restrictions and accountability is not just at the bottom, but encouraged at the top. Buy, buy, buy even when you can't afford it. People need to take responsibility for their actions. Don't buy something you can't afford and/or that would place you in jeopardy if you lost your job. Many who were unemployed were able to get a mortgage. That is irresponsible and just plain stupid. Cash and carry still makes sense. You can't afford it, don't buy it. |

| I fully believe that the wages for Congressional and Senatorial representation should be frozen. They are doing nothing. They have become a body whose sole purpose is to raise money to continue their jobs. Period. Yet, they do no work. No real work. The real work is done by staff members, lobbyists and special interest groups.
As for the "national debt." I like some of Alice's ideas - let the English take us back. But I don't want to pay for a monarchy - that was the impetus to give birth to this nation. Beware however that the English have their problems also.
We have the ability to vote out the Congressional and Senatorial representatives ; we voted in a bunch of do-nothings in 2010. They signed a pledge with Grover Norquist and have done nothing. That was sure smart on the part of U.S. citizens.
The amount of money being spent on the political campaigns would make a significant dent in the national debt.

| Thank you for agreeing with some of my ideas, DK. I truly do believe the English have a much more civilized society than we, the USA do.
Consider the death penalty--abolished in England. Hitting kids --not in England Health Care--Universal in England Gun ownership --Curtailed in England
I like the monarchy. Shelagh said they generate revenue. It would be refreshing to have a break from the ceaseless badgering of President and Mrs. Obama. They deserve some respect.
Lawsuits are not as prevalent there as here.
It is assumed in England that if you wish to live, use your head.
I will never get over my shock at Land's End. Drop off's straight into the ocean and no guard rails.
At breakfast I asked, "Does anyone ever fall off?
"Eight per year."
Despite this, their lifespan exceeds ours.

| On an English Bank note it says "I promise to pay the bearer on demand the sum of (whatever value the note is) Pounds". Now theoretically the pound refers to a measure of gold. So could we go into the Bank of England brandishing our Twenty Pound Note and demand Twenty pounds of gold without being thrown out? |
