| I don't like calamari, and wouldn't want to cook it.
I like just about any leafy green, including beet tops.
I just saw a TV add for a local restaurant that showed a platter of chicken flautas with three sauces, and now I'm craving that.

| Whoever said that God doesn't have a sense of humour? He made something that is good for you unpalatable (liver) and a whole host of stuff that is bad for you taste delicious. |

| Ohhh. Now I'm hungry for some pan-fried liver and onions to go with my beet greens.

| The first time I ate escargot I didn't know they were snails. The sauce tasted great. The same was true for eating octopus. If I knew it was octopus I wouldn't have eaten it. Only after I ate it and said it was good was I told what it was. My wife loves Calamari. She never makes it, but orders it when we eat at our favorite greek restuarant.
What I won't eat is horse or snake meat. |

| I love escargot, too, and knew what they were. My dad encouraged me to try them. His job took him pretty much around the world, and he always steeped himself into the culture of the places he visited, including the food.
He also encouraged me to eat shark soup, but I didn't try it. I could see globs of fish oil floating on the broth of his serving.
I tried calamari, once.
I am not averse to trying new things.
I've heard that rattlesnake is quite tasty.

| The ides of a snake freaks me out. Major indigestion would occur, I am certain. Beet tops sound better all the time. |

| I had a very good friend while I was teaching who was from Buffalo, New York. She used to laugh about southerners eating vegetables backwards. She couldn't understand why we at the tops of root vegetables like turnips and beets.

| We eat the roots, too. It may be about rural eating habits over urban. Southern cooking stems from an agricultural background. Farmers learned to use just about everything, including pig's knuckles as well as cow's tongues (very tasty - is there a pun in that?) and stomachs (a lot like eating squid's tentacles).

| Ann, I did that also. I always ate what was offered. In some cultures, to refuse what is offered is an insult. I never got sick from what I ate, and actually enjoyed the food. |

| Stomachs? Sounds like tripe. Another unpalatable food stuff that's good for you: Salt and pepper and lots of vinegar help the medicine go down. |

| Yes, and in Mexico and the Southeast, they make it into Menudo. http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/menudo-rojo-red-menudo/detail.aspx Notice that it cooks for over seven hours, and is seasoned with lots of spices and very hot peppers. Ann |

I've done a bit of traveling around the world myself, Abe. Once, in Mexico, I did get sick. We had to call in the hotel doctor. He arrived in an open-necked white linen and lace-trimmed shirt over a pair of faded jeans, and he looked a little and sounded a lot like Ricardo Montalbon. He told me, "My dear, you must e-love Me-ji-co with your e-heart, not with your e-stomach," and provided us with the names of a couple of antibiotics which we could buy over the counter at any drug or convenience store. I would have done just about anything that man said I should do. Afterwards, on each of our many trips there, we made a point of stopping to stock up on those drugs. I generally tried things at least once, and most of the time, I enjoyed it. I remember especially enjoying that meal before we had to call in a doctor. Ann |

| The last time I went to Mexico was Cancun. Eating there was like eating here -all the restaurants were US chains. It was great! lol As you might tell, I'm not an adventurous eater.
Shelagh -that tripe picture looks like holidady decorations my mom used to buy. Flat, they looked like two pieces of cardboard, but when you opened the cardboard, the greatest folded paper decorations appeared! |
