| 9/23/2009 Hi Everyone... Just read an article on MSNBC on " Shoppers Of All Incomes Have Changed Their Shopping Habits." How have you changed yours at the supermarket ? I'll go first. I look for major sales, I have a walk in pantry , so I have to start thinking of old man Winter. I look for sales that are 10 for $10- especially oatmeal, here the regular price at ALbertsons is $4.99 for large size, this week on sale for $1.88 , that's a savings of $3.11 each. I look for Asparagus my favorite on sale Sunflower Market $1.47 lb. Albertsons $2.99 lb savings $1.52 lb . I always buy chicken, fish, por chops, price is better at Sunflower Market , Albertsons $1.50 or more a pound.. Cheers...Joe... |

| I shop carefully, don't waste food, purchase sale items but only if I really need them, eat leftovers, and check what I already have in my pantry.

| 9/23/2009 The reason I stock up, is first I don't like to run to the store 2 to 3 times a week, second Winter here in Santa Fe can be just as bad as the east coast, I remember 3 years ago on New Years day we had more than two feet of snow and our compound wasn't dug out for two days. Here in the Winter it can be 30 the high and 15 low at night, it's funny many tourists who come here think the weather is like Arizona , I've been to Phoenix , I couldn't take it 113 during the day and 95 at night, awful ..... Cheers...Joe... |

Carol Good advice. Having a plan helps, too. I recently posted an article from Real Simple that had a list of recipes that could all be fixed from 10 basic ingredients. I've recently found two more in Fitness Magazine that are even better. And the broccoli recipes are just as good with green beans instead. (Same ingredient on both pages, but different recipes using them.) http://www.fitnessmagazine.com/recipes/quick-recipes/dinner/easy-healthy-recipes/ http://www.fitnessmagazine.com/recipes/quick-recipes/dinner/healthy-dishes/?page=1 Ann |

| Jackie and I were Depression kids so we never got over being frugal. That means nothing changed for us. The only things we ever bought without paying cash were houses. Even cars were paid for in full. Maybe that's why our Toyota Camry is 15 years old. Or maybe not. Like Joe, Jackie always stocks up on food for winter. |

| The Red Cross emphasizes the importance of stocking up and having a hand can opener. Spam could be a life saver.
Before Tom's hip surgery last October, when we knew we would be alone and neither one of us could drive, he went to the grocery store and bought an enormous amount of food. I think we still have some of it in our pantry.
Then there is the issue of our daughter coming once a year and checking our food for expiration dates.

Are we feeling witty today or testy? Well. Alice, ever since I became a forum administrator (back in 2005) members of forums have read my comments and assumed I am irritated, aggravated, in a bad mood, have an attitude etc. etc. The truth is I'm either too busy or too lazy or both to work up any kind of emotion about anything written on the 'net. I do laugh a lot, though. |

| My weekly shopping bill has nearly doubled up till now I have never figured out why? Things are costing more in the supermarket. Price increases are a vicious circle. The cost of fuel goes up and is passed down the line, the cost of transport goes up and passed on, the price of electricity goes up and eventually food gets it, then some oil barron decides it's costing more to transport his oil around and feed his family so he puts up the price of his oil and round and round it goes again. Truth is there was never any real reason for the price rises in the first place. Just some greedy so and so who put his price up for no reason only so he could make a little more money. Little did he realise what he'd started. Thats my theory for what its worth. Oh and yep I've changed my shopping we order our goods online and the food is delivered next day. It's a buyers market at the moment so they say. |

| It's the same here. They say there is no inflation so why does everything keep getting more expensive? |

| David,
With your family, you must order a lot of food. I recall the small refrigerators in England and wonder how you manage.
You msut have 7 people in your house, you mentioned that one had gone away.
What are the ages of those remaining? |

| I find it difficult to understand why prices have increased, as mentioned on various posts. Where I live, prices have come down, and that includes food. To stimulate the economy, reduction in pricing makes sense. With so many people out of work or on a limited budget, raising prices or sticking with inflated prices, is illogical. History records how people, working together, can rise from the ashes and build a strong economy. That does not happen when people refuse to acknowledge that change is required. Perhaps they haven't yet felt enough pain. Working for the good of the many, rather than the few, is logical.

| We have one remaining Alice and she will be 22 this November. She spends half the week staying with her boyfriend so the house is quite empty a lot of the time, so is the fridge. Our main dependents are our two two year old black Cats (sorry Dick!), Mork and Oscar both brothers who entertain us from time to time.
We also have the odd asortment of spiders who visit, my wife loves them but in me they instill some ancient fear which often manifests itself by stamping a foot on them. The thing I like about our cats is that they will hunt them out. |

| Abe there are those greedy people who can't resist making extra money out of this financial crisis. that is the only reason for price rises. When a rescource becomes limited because it is running out, up goes the price for no valid reason and someone gets richer as a result, it's a cycle of events a bit like a snowball rolling down a hillside. |

| I think I still have a can of Spam from God knows how long ago... Between Spam and fruitcake, we should never go hungry. I don't go out to eat nearly as much, but I've never been one to waste money. Just the basics, with a few fun things thrown in. If I make sure to eat before I go to the store, fewer fun things appear at the checkout line. Funny how that happens... Plus, I believe in eating leftovers. |
