| Okay... Green is everywhere. Really. Recycle. Reuse. Re.... So...I have one question... Why--when we are bombarded daily by the green movement--do I get an average of five glossy mail-order catelogs a day this time of year??? I feel better now. |

| Good answer, Pam. I have to agree. Greed is prevalent in the marketplace. They just want your money, they know you aren't out in the malls spending bucks and hope to entice you to shop their store or order by mail. They also know consumers are trying to recycle, so they figure their little splurge won't hurt anything. Sheesh, more bailouts? |

| Rhett, I suppose taking the green out of the forest to make the catalogs doesn't fit in this example. Now if they sent the catalogs using re-cycled paper, it would be more acceptable and appropriate. We get more and more of that where I live. There is a statement applied on the brochure or catalog that states, "produced from re-cycled paper." It gives one a better feeling about the producer. |

Christmas arrives early for credit companies, so we have a rerun of the credit crisis again in 2009 . Where I am, we get unsolicited magazines PLUS two large piles of newspapers per week. Mainly advertising high class escorts and facial hair removal services...plus an ever growing number of fast foods joints opening up to add to the obesity problem. I just sling them straight into the bin without a second look |

| Yes Ahad, all that unsolicited junk mail is such a waste. It is a waste of money to produce and then it becomes waste and needs to be hauled away.
On my mailbox I have a note that says: "Keine Werbung," meaning "No Advertising Material." It sure does cut down on the trash. |

| In Mexico the big word is "Eco". In my area, one of great natural beauty being turned into condos really fast, there is an Eco Auto Rental, an Eco taxi, and an EcoTours place that takes people on tours of the jungle on four wheel motorbikes and the reef on jet skis.
During the last election I was pissed off that the lagoon by my house had a bunch of little rafts floating on it with posters on them. Too far out to read. But they ended up piled up on the shore in a clutter of junk and you could read the canditate name: for the Green Party. |

| Just to really make your day, maddhatter, I was once a catalog director, mailing 3 million catalogs at a crack.
You know what the industry conversion rate is? Meaning what percentage of people actually buy from a catalog you mail them?
You're doing REALLY good if it's four percent. |

| It's estimated that half of them go right in the trash without being read. |

| Here the phrase is "no junk mail" and I love this...in the mailroom in my building is a bin so that as you take the flyers out of your mailbox, you can chuck them directly into the trash.
I had a call the other day from a fellow that had picked up his mail, thought it was all junk and so tossed it into his woodstove, only to see the flyers kind of melt away from the envelope that contained his cheque...ouch. |

| I had a careless co-worker. She stayed ahead of the ball by throwing everything in the garbage. She worked circles around me who needed to pore over everything. One day I passed by her bin and on top was an envelope marked CHECK ENCLOSED. I pulled it out and asked, "Do you really want this in the garage?" It was a check for a large sum whch had previousy been issued to us--I know where the first one went.

| Okay...now...another thing... I smile when I see this... Notice how it has become stylish to be frugal? My parents lived well, but not over the top. I try my best to follow their example. No huge McMansions or cars with pricetags bigger than my life insurance policy payoff... Lately, I have noticed more and more mainstream articles on the joys of simple living. Go figure... I am finally in fashion. Now if they will just make ample body proportions a thing to be desired; I will be all set. |
