| In view of recent events, Is anyone more careful about what they put on the web? Just curious, as usual

| Alice, I think it is a good reminder to all that what we post is public. Anyone checking us out can glean much about us. That is especially important for those who wish to remain anonymous. |

| Abe,
I couldn't agree more. It disturbs me when people post nude pictures of their children on Facebook. I worry about pedophiles. |

| It is a wise thing not to believe anything you see on Facebook. Much of it is wrong. Check it out at Snopes.com. |

| 7/6/2013 Alice.. I only use Facebook for my art and photography, I never, ever post anything personal and yet I see people spiling their guts there, my art site automatically post any art or photos I post for sale, otherwise I never have much to say there.. Cheers...Joe.. |

| I have heard some employers check Facebook before hiring. Scary. They used to content themselves with running credit reports. |

| I agree with Abe Joe and DK. Most of my Facebook posts are automatic--some unintentionally so--as whatever I post on one of my blogs is posted there by default. I post very little there and mostly browse what others post, though not on a daily basis. It just takes too much time--which is what I disappear from here for days on end. Just answering direct emails and things that get posted from other boards that I visit from time to time is hard. And it keeps me from doing what I need to be doing. We are slaves to technology. Facebook is especially dangerous because others can post what we never might ourselves and there are some unsavory people that use that information. Would you announce your birthday or travel plans to the world? Of course not, if you're security conscious. But friends don't always think before they write about us, and sometimes even I get confused as to whether I'm responding to an email or posting online when I get a message from a friend online through Facebook or Linked In.
How about we all chuck these things in the river and go back to actual letters and cards to people we care about and who care about us? Remember the fun in waiting for the postal carrier who might bring news from afar, or more than a fistful of greeting cards on the holidays?

| Think I've said before, FB is how I keep up with relatives I don't get to see often.
There was a bit of a funny little war going on yesterday: Daughter Susan posted a close-up of one of her roses. Cousin Nita commented that it was as perfect as Uncle Clarence's'[my dad] always were. Susan responded re how she loved the garage fridge that was always full of fresh cut stems and blooms. I commented that, yes, her Dada would be proud. That apparently irked my former sis-in-law, who commented that we all had to be KIDDING because it actually looked like their Grandfather Dee's PRIZES. I was so proud of myself. I simply said that my father got a lot of advice from JD [her father] when he was starting out. I said nothing about the fact that her father chopped down his bushes and stopped growing them altogether a few years later, after my father's roses started winning all the awards at the rose shows [which everybody commenting on Susan's photo already knew]. She had to get in one last comment: "He had the tallest bushes!"
I'm hoping it ended there. I haven't been back to check.
And there is my cousin, the oldest from the one fundamentalist branch, who always has a caustic comment about my "New Paradigm" posts, but I understood where his father was coming from, and I generally admire him, so I let them go. (especially since he buys and reads my books.)
We were a very close-knit bunch growing up. We tend to remember the good times over the bad stuff, so our FB friendships are very important to all of us.
It depends, I think, on how we use these social media. |

| Alice,
I thought a lot more than twice about posting on the Zimmerman thread, that's why I didn't post at all! |

| That was a smart move, Don. Some issues tend to create animosity, especially with sensationalized events. We all have strong feelings about some issues, i.e., gun control. Mine is mostly about the Middle East and try my best to refrain from commenting. Sometimes an opinion is warranted when comments made stem from ignorance. |

| In my short time here I have noticed Joe has no problem posting his opinions, which is cool, but threads such as those can lead to flame wars, therefore I stay away from them, for the most part. |

| Good question. Give your opinion. It's as good as anyone else's. Maybe you can qualify for "stupid or poorly informed ." It is fun. |

Maybe you can qualify for "stupid or poorly informed ." It is fun. Many years ago when Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister, my father asked my opinion about the euro. I said that I didn't know enough about it to offer an opinion. He said: "Even if you don't know anything about it, you can still have an opinion." Translation: How can I put you right if you won't offer an opinion. Fighting talk. |

| Ah, Shelagh. You are wise. Opinions are great fuel for fighting since they are so often based on different interpretations of the same events, colored by emotion and personal paradigms. |
