Shit happens. Although the buyer may be made to feel guilty if he doesn't return the ring, he bought the box and what was inside. It belongs to the buyer.

I had eight small diamonds that I bought in Hong Kong to make a ring. I hid them like a dummy in a spool of thread in the sewing kit. Of course they disappeared. That kit was used by the maid, the seamstress, the designer and anyone who needed scissors, thread, a ripper, a button - you get it - DUMB. They probably fell out as most of the people would never suspect such a dumb hiding place. The kit was hauled all over the house.
