Ann you reminded me of an experience I had sailing. We caught a gigantic dolphin - in the air it is all the colors of the rainbow. As it hit the deck, I could see the life force leave the fish and the colors with it. I felt badly. I was reminded that I read Indians would pray over the food they killed and thank it for nourishing their body. I felt like praying over that fish. We only caught what we ate, and those fish in the ocean at least had a fighting chance and a normal existence before we caught them.

Bill and I had a similar experience while deep-sea fishing near Acapulco. A member of our party hooked a sailfish. There was a point where our hosts said we could choose to let the fish go, otherwise, we would be paying to have it mounted.
Our guest, who had hooked the fish - a relative and a client, decided he wanted the fish on his office wall.
As you said, we watched the colors fade as the life went out of it. Our hosts reassured our guest that the colors would be painted back on, and a few years later, I happened to be in the man's office and saw it on the wall. The work was well done, but I kept thinking of the way it looked on the boat that day.

Our neighbor had cows and they loved him--would come mooing to greet him every night when he came home.
His thanks: Had a slaughter team come shoot them and saw them up for meat.
I was so outraged, our children were horrified.

It's very complicated - what we eat. In other countries they eat monkeys, cats and dogs. In others they don't eat cows.

i have watched as my Wooffer passed away. I have watched as my Sarah passed away.
What is left of their spirits, for me, is inside my memory.
I would like to think that their spirits have joined the spirits of all life that went before them and that they are eternal. Perhaps they are and it is my small faith that does not know for sure.
Over the road in Lester's field, is the third or fouth generation of the cows that are in the Wooffer book. They wink and blink in their knowledge that they are the only generation of cows to live in that pasture. That is the limit of their knowledge because not one cow is left there from the olden days to tell them that time has passed on and many of their relations were there before them.
We humans are lucky. We can read a book and know that other people have lived here before us who had other ideas, limited knowledge, high hopes and lovely dreams of a future that no one had yet envisioned..
How important is that?
Love,
Betty

If you can flip or fast forward through the first 5 or 6 minutes of this clip, you will see that I had a very cogent reason for posting it here; sorrry there is so must extraneous stuff up front (funny, though, if you have the extra time to watch):

Ann,
Good, very good. I loved it and watched it all.
Crowe has very clever kids--not at all surprising.
