People are different. Obviously. Do you wish to be remembered for what you did or didn't do?

I wish to be remembered in death as I am regarded in life. Anything else would be pretense.

I had a exercise once to write one's own eulogy. That might be a good writing exercise here. As long as it's is looked at for its quality, not its precognition or morbid thoughts.

I want to be remembered for trying to follow the golden rule to treat my neighbor as myself and for being kind and loving as often as I could. I want to be remembered as loving words, children, dancing and old movies. I want to be remembered as a good friend with a hopeful outlook.

Dear Alice,
I sit here thinking about how I remember people who have left this earthly planet that I was lucky enough to know a little bit. It really is not their deeds that I remember, but their attitude about their own living that leaves their essence in my heart.
I hope that people remember me for my essence. My feeling of joy in my every day, my wonder of this universe, my love for all creatures (including crows )
I hope I have broken the cycle of abuse that was handed down upon me. I hope I have changed all that for the generations that come after me.
Love, Betty

Rest assured, Betty. All of us who have come to know you are aware that you have succeeded.

Dear Ann, I have felt that life is not long enough for one person to repair the damage of the last generation. Perhaps I am not asked to do that great of a task. If I narrow the scope to include just my children and my self, It seems something that can be done. In that light, I hope I have done my best. Love, Betty

We did an exercise at Unity Sisters this morning that reminded me of this post. We each were asked to use only six words to describe ourselves, our philosophy or something special about our life. Mine was: Swamp soothes stress through sweet serenity.

About you I'd say: Actions exhibit considerable intellect and empathy.

As with most people who have spent a bit more than a half century on this planet, I will leave behind an endless number of unopened doors, of paths not taken, and a handful of regrets too deep for words that time can never fully heal. But I hope not to be remembered for any of that or for any specific ephemeral accomplishments rightfully forgotten as soon as they were achieved. Rather, I hope that those who knew me will remember me for trying my best despite my many flaws to do what is right rather than what is expedient in my private and professional life. If that happens, I will have proven worthy of the sacrifices and the unacknowledged quiet heroism of my parents and grandparents as they endured unimaginable hardships. If not, mine will be a wasted life regardless of what kind comments friends, family or colleagues might make about me once I am gone.

How would I wish to be remembered? There's only one answer to that: for what I did for others.

I love re-reading this thread. It's always good to see it coming up again.
It's kind of proof, for me, that we all really do "tell the same stories," simply from a slightly different and unique perspective.

As I see it, life is in many phases. The early years of dependency; the years of independence and career building; the years of family and wealth buildng; the years of spiritual awareness and philosophical reorientation; the years of service to others; the years of declining health.
In each, there are gains and losses, good and bad. Along with those years are sets of friends and family that fit with the phase. Unless you have accomplished something exceptional, the only people who know about you and your life are the few who have been in the circle at the time.
In the end, most of us will only be remembered briefly by a few intmate friends and family members. The beauty of life is that it goes on. Those we leave have their own lives to lead. Life fills in the empty spaces.
I expect that I won't be remembered except in a passing comment.

Even those with plaques and buildings - the name lives on the plaque but following generations don't have a clue about the person who made the donation and was honored.
At least the Hollywood Walk of Fame puts in the hand and foot prints while the star lives.
