| Shelagh, had you considered using your publishing to publish ebooks? |

| I've published Living by the Swamp in ebook format. I would offer the book as a free download, but the idea behind giving away a book is to give readers a chance to test out an author before they buy another book. Alice would have to write a new book or hold the electronic rights to PP&P so that I can upload it to KDP. I might bring that forward a bit, closer to Christmas, since this would be a good time to offer a free children's book. |

| Shelagh, not disagreeing all that much, but the design is pretty much what is posted on the book now. With the earth in the bottom of a black background and the red and yellow flames (sun or ?) headed for it. The font in different, and the lettering is shaded differently, but the basic design is pretty much the same one I already have.
Yours looks great, but it's not exactly your design. Actually. I've been doing graphic design since the late 80's, and while I haven't been going for anything really fancy, it not something I generally need help on.
Here's a link to the cover that's posted on Kindle for the story. And guys, believe it or not, this isn't a contest.

| Well, I'm plowing through the smashwords process information at smashwords and was wondering where you get your ISBNs? |

| I guess I should have worded my question as to which options you choose: your own as a publisher (Shelagh, you may have a dozen or so already at hand), the free Smashwords as publisher or the Premium $9.95 listing the author as distributor. Since I plan to put up a lot of short stories, I'm going the free route. |

| I have been reading Smashword's guide.
Lyn got me thinking about what I do have that I could publish right now on Smashwords. I have my Amazon Short, Moe's Hallowed Eve, to start with. Perhaps I could get that on Smashwords and offer it free in time for Halloween and be ready with some of the other stories after November.
My thought is to (after my contract is up with PublishAmerica) make each story in Wooffer a separate ebook. It might take a bit of re-writing each so that the
story stands alone and all the characters are understood without having read the previous stories.
I am so encouraged by all of your successes I am dragging out stories that I have
not looked at in a long, long, while.
Love,
Betty |

| I am thinking new stories for this, too.
There are so many generations of cats in this country space. Cats whose mothers' were dropped on this lonley road as a kittens by some ignorant ass who thought cats could hunt there own food. Some have survived by their wits and have produced many kittens that struggle to live, too. I see them every day, suspicious and afraid. No amount of food put out will coax them in. They are feral, wild, and will never be tame. They will not eat cat food. It is strange to them. They hunt the birds, the frogs and lizards.
A hard life.
Love,
Betty |

| A former colleague of mine runs an organization that seeks out these cats and their litters and tries to find homes for them. They also neuter the male to prevent further litters in the wild. |

- That's what I was thinking - about the collection. I am working on a couple more as I work on the novel. Once I have all four, I will set a price for the collection and see if it will sell.
Vision Quest is gaining on Incident at Smashwords. I'm not sure which one should stay free.
Ann I am not a published author. I have a lot to learn, but I've read everything I could get my hands on since I first started reading. One problem with yours, Ann, and I'm not trying to be mean. I do like youre writing. But from what I've read, youre stories are not whole storys. Their part of another story and their only four and five pages long. I'd feel cheated if I had to pay for any of them. That's a problem with buying ebooks from unknown writers. I think a story needs to be a whole story before a writer puts them in the public. And I know everyone will boo me for this but thats how I feel. |

| No boos.
They are meant to be bits and pieces to get people curious about the characters. That's why the are free. Once I have the rest of the shorts finished, I will put them into an anthology, and maybe charge a minimal price.
The novels will tell the whole stories, but they, too are a series, so they will build on each other.

| Lyn is echoing what has already been said on Amazon's forums. Readers do not want to read excerpts from novels that are longer than the free short story. They feel cheated and think it is a poor way to promote a novel.. |

| These stories are not part of any of the novels. They are totally different stories about the same characters. Vision Quest was originally written to be part of the first novel, but I was never satisfied with it there.
I wouldn't think that other stories about the characters would be a problem.

| No, it wouldn't. It's parts of chapters that are longer than short stories added to bump up word count, and for promotion, that aggravate readers. It's quite odd the way that readers are bombarded with promotions from authors on radio, television and newspapers (author interviews), but they object to self-publishers talking about/promoting their work. Without the backing of a publishing house, anything an indie author has to say is not appreciated. |

| Ah. We still have a way to go, I guess.
I'm relieved. I'm at least halfway through The Treaty, and the next in line (probably the last), Karin, is already working through my head.

| It has rained all day so I worked on the Moe story, rewriting the beginning so that it becomes one of the Wooffer stories in the book and to get it style ready for Smashwords. I think I have it. I am up to making the cover. I wanted to have all my stories go under the (A Wooffer's Woods Story) blanket as individual shorts that could be down loaded alone or, once I have them all re-done as separates, as a collection of The Wooffer Woods Stories which would include them all. I know that many of the stories are too short as is for individual presentations. Some, I can combine together to make one good story and others will have to be re-written a whole lot. I thought the Moe story could be, Moe's Hallowed Eve (a Wooffer's Wood Story) Betty Fasig For a cover, I considered a picture of the woods here that was just the woods, no animals in the picture, that could be used for each of the stories with new titles of each story. I have such a picture that I am considering. I know it would have to be cropped and resized. Maybe the title of the story on the ferns. What think you all? Love, Betty |
