Thanks Shelagh. I know we sold one book yesterday for the Kindle version...hard to tell if it was at the original or the sale price from the KDP page. Either way...I'll take it. That brings us up to 17 total for the Kindle version since January this year.

PostSubject: Re: Sizzling Summer Sale   Sizzling Summer Sale EmptyWed Jul 13, 2011 9:38 am

Update...we have sold two Amazon Kindle books since the Sizzling Summer Sale began. There are only nine more days left at the rock bottom price of $2.99 each. Saturday, July 23, 2011 the price will return to $5.99 each for some time.

Personally, I think both prices are a steal for all the Action/Adventure/Political Intrigue that is in it. Granted this might not be everybody's cup of tea. The Mature Audience may also be a turn off. If anyone reading this knows someone who might be interested please let them know about this limited time offer.

The Sizzling Summer Sale is now in its final week. Please don't miss this rock bottom price.

I would hope everyone knows that one does not have to have a Kindle or a Nook reader to enjoy e-books from them.

It's not easy selling books in such a competitive environment. Those that have temporary spurts seem to be those that are free for a while. I haven't found a whole lot of difference in selling an ebook at $2.99 versus $4.99. Your experiment will be interesting and I hope very successful.

That's true, you just need to be able to get the application.
My brother can read them from his iPad and Verizon has a Samsung Galaxy Tab that works sort of like the iPad and has a book reader application on it.

Thanks for your support. I'm realizing just how difficult it can be. Right now, I've been pushing the sales aspect. People do love a sale.

I've had some non-author friends who didn't realize that Kindle and Nook could be read on a PC or other devices...so have been trying to walk them through the process best that I can. Have you ever had to help someone find how to download your e-book?

That's cool that your brother has those apps. Some people have special phones and don't even know how to use the apps...(um that might be me but eventually I'd figure it out.)

It's very easy to download the Smartphone and PC Kindle app. And after that it's not a lot of trouble to download the book.

I haven't noticed a lot of difference in downloads because of prices either. I average about one download a day, and sometimes it's a $7.99 book, and other times it's a .99 cent short story. I have just about all of my works, books, shorts, and collections, on both Kindle and Smashwords, and I think having them out there in their ebook format has been worth the trouble it is to format and sumbit them.

Doesn't mean I've given up on print though. The new paperback edition of Sundown Two, written by myself and Phil Whitley is now available on Amazon, as well as in ebook format.

I've not misssed getting a royalty check from Amazon since I first started in the old Amazon Shorts program, and have been getting one just about every month from the Kindle sales.

Hoping that 2012 sees a good upturn in downloads.

I know the Amazon Shorts have been absorbed into the $.99 or free Kindles, but I miss the concept. A lively dialogue among authors and readers followed the new releases and those that rose to the top of the Amazon Shorts reading lists. I do think they drew attention to other books at Amazon.com.

I guess they were just too much trouble compared to the revenue gained by Amazon.com

They were a catalyst to my writing. Often, I would write a short that later developed into something more complex.

People I know who sell jewelry and art have a higher markup and big profits when they sell something.

Jewelry: $1.99 to make. Selling price: $25.00 - $50.00
. S
Painging: $10.00 to make with canvas plus $25.00 frame.

Selling Price: $250 - $500

Book: $3.99 to print. Selling price: $14.95

ebook: 0 to print. Selling price: .99 to $4.99

I wish we could say that about not missing a royalty check. I think our book is probably not one of the more popular genres...or the Mature Audience recommendation might have some thinking twice. I feel it is important to forewarn though because some people are sensitive to language and sexual situations.

We do have our book on Create Space (POD) but not putting that on sale just yet as it is less than a month old.

We may not have paid Amazon to print the e-book but we did have expenses for the editing and book layout. At this rate we may never get paid back...our price is based on genre and book length as provided to us from different sources. That being said, I understand your inference and thank you for it.

Lynn, I don't do a lot of editing. I can, but it takes me a while to edit my own work because I always re-write as I edit. Anyway, I have a couple of people who help out, and we seem to get the job done.

Formatting the interior of the book and the layout for the cover involves a bit of work and some time, and neither are simple, but once you grasp the basics it's not impossible to do. Just takes a bit of knowledge about word prossessing beyond what most people use. Also, I did a lot of graphic design in the music business for CD covers and such, so that's not a problem either. Certainly nothing that I would pay someone else to do.

So, the only actual dollars that I spend with Create Space is for the proof copy. But that is $10 or so well spent, as it allows me to see if there is anything I want to change and then to do so before the book hits the market.

I've very carefully weighed the pros and cons of publishing my own works via CreateSpace or using another independent publisher to do it, and I think that unless I can sign with someone that has national distribution and can get books in stores, I'm about as well off doing it myself. Most small publishers don't offer advances, and even though they will give you some copies of the book, they also make the bulk of the money, assuming anyone buys some copies. So, I think that if I can't get and advance and I can't get books in stores, I can do all the rest of it myself.

Don,

I think you could make a substantial amount of money out of your Kindle books. You have a collection of books that could really take off. This article explains the rinse, lather, repeat pricing system:

http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-18438_7-20037800-82.html#ixzz1SJBcb57D

I would also recommend that you buy a copy of John Locke's ebook:

http://www.amazon.com/Sold-Million-eBooks-Months-ebook/dp/B0056BMK6K

It's only $4. You have everything set up and ready to go. If you follow John's advice, you could make big sales.

Don,

This was our very first book. Had no real clue what we were getting into at the time. The editor took it apart then told us what was wrong and then asked if we agreed with the changes. We did for the most part. It was a learning experience. When we are ready to edit our second book will probably use a critic partnership deal with some fellow authors.

Considering that you have the editing and proofing thing down and know what you are getting into, I suggest that you keep being an Independent Author...you have more control over the content.

That being said, I will tell you about Independent Authors and Writers' website. It is less than 10 days old and has had a lot of people come in and posting their books for notice by fellow authors and hopefully soon readers. So if that sounds of interest to you (or anyone else looking in) you might want to go to:
http://www.independentauthors.org/

The companion Facebook Fan page has recently gotten a following on twitter. It has even been 'liked' by Penguin U.K. Books, so who knows - you might get a contract offer from them...it could happen. So if this is of interest then you can visit:

https://www.facebook.com/IndependentAuthors

In the spirit of honesty and fair play, I will tell you that I've been tagged to pick the book of the day and it is being put on the Facebook fan page at the moment and eventually a column on the website. Also, I've been promoting this website and Facebook page long before I was tagged for the position. I just like to help fellow authors in any way I can...paying it forward, if you will.

I've heard of John Locke in several places...some people swear by him.

I also wanted to let you know, Shelagh, that I totally forgot that our Kindle e-book is also on Amazon U.K.:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Call-Sign-Wrecking-Warning-ebook/dp/B004INHK2G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1310941786&sr=8-1

I presume it is also on sale there as well. (I can't tell because when I just looked it told price unavailable.)
