Today I bought gas , a shocker $3.21 for un-leaded the highest is $3.50 for premium. Read in California $3.75 a gallon.... Diesel truck use to deliver good is now $3.89 , where are we going ? Why doesn't the govt. release the reserves, we are in a time of desperation, are they waiting till gas reaches $6.00 a gallon or More ?
Cheers..Joe |

| Gas rationing is exactly what should be done. However, I believe that the rising gas prices (ahead of the actual spikes in oil by the barrel) will provide its own rationing measure. The oil companies will continue to gain their profits while calling for drilling. This country has wasted enough natural resources. It's time for public transportation, car pooling, telecommuting, bikes, etc. It's time to use other energy sources that will not deplete over time and do not make us dependent on an unstable Middle East. It is not the time to release reserves. We have been "in war" for too many years to remember, watching it on television and feeling none of the consequences. Well, the revolution in the Middle East is finally costing us in the pocketbook and the food stores. Perhaps we will finally learn to be more conservative and find alternative energy sources. $6.00? It's probably been that high everywhere else in the world that imports fuel already. We are fuel hogs in this country.
Of course, it's "easier" and more politically acceptable to release reserves. Planning for an independent energy future takes thought and investment, neither of which suits politicians who need immediate gratification to retain their political jobs. |

| The gov't reserves would only knock down gas prices a few cents.
It would be PR only. |

| I agree that we need to be more conservative, not release reserves. When gas went down from a spike over a year ago, the Hummers came back. Let the people who want to drive Hummers pay the price for it. Let the people who want to drive long distances pay for it. Same goes for heating and cooling big houses. I don't care.
Cue the expected crying about the "working poor." They can stop buying cigarettes and put it towards their gas money. |

| The working poor that I know travel by bus, train, other public transit, bicycle and last resort, shared automobiles. Their transportation is a higher percent of their income so they try to find the cheapest transport. However, if public transport is available, they'll take it.
I agree that those who choose gas guzzling transportation should pay the price for it. My friend (who has no children and hauls nothing) is complaining about the price to fill her Lexus SUV that takes hi test. I wondered about her sanity when she bought it in the first place. Prestige...she can afford it anyway.
Workers who are minimally paid can be issued transportation vouchers by their employers to get to and from work. Hotels provide buses for their low income workers. Employers will just need to help their workers get to work if the cost of fuel is prohibitive and public transportation not available.
Of course, once again, the wealthy will continue to drive their gas guzzlers and suffer little since their transportation cost is such a minimal piece of their income. The poorest always feel the pain of high expenses for necessities. |

| I am among the working poor. I don't have any vices like lottery, cigarettes or alcohol but when the gas price goes up, it hurts. |

| I was driving 100 miles round trip each day for work. My brother drives that much. I guess every challenge has a blessing; I'm no longer driving 100 miles round trip...
It's always the lowest on the economic chart who suffer from the costs of fuel price increases. The elderly die because they can't afford the fuel costs for heat. Food costs, already prohibitive at the lowest end of the economic ladder, climb and take a bigger bite from the meager income. Especially in these difficult economic times, a fuel increase was not needed.
Sometimes it takes a crisis to resolve a problem. It's time to resolve our fuel dependence. |

| Public transportation is used in Europe where gas prices have been double that of the USA. Fuel-efficient cars are needed. People change only when they feel a need to change. Perhaps the high prices will help to make this need felt.
There are numerous facets to conservation, and it begins with us. A simple act of turning off a light when not needed, helps. Walking instead of driving, sharing a ride with a neighbor, helps conserve.
There are many ways to conserve, making a list may be the first step for personal awareness. |

| In this country, we go for a drive on a sunny weekend. In other countries, people go for a hike. |

| In this country, driving a convertible is enjoying the fresh air. In other countries, riding a bike accomplishes the same thing. |
