Is it a common practice to ever make audio books before actual books?

I wonder how that would turn out?

Don't know how common.  Cheaper and easier to make ebooks. There are people doing "Podcasts", which are essentially like audiobooks, but divided into serial episodes.  Some have gotten wide readership, leading to publisher contracts.

Dear Lin,
I will look into Podcasts. I do own the audio rights to Wooffer. I am not too computer literate when it comes to all the things one can do to promote their work. Any help you can offer will be appreciated.

Love,
Betty

Understand that I haven't done this, myself. I use programs that could do it, but don't have the voice for it. But I know people who do and have been working on a publication about it. I'm going to try to paste the resouce links here for you. Be interesting to see how it works.

One free download I would REALLY recommend is audacity. It's a very simple, cross-platform audio editor. You can use it to record things as wav or mp3 (with a free plug-in for mp3). Upload your mp3 songs and use it to clip the applause off the end of a life track and fade it smoothly out. Great for grabbing 1.47 minutes of sound out of the middle of a track to use as video background.

And, of course, just the thing for recording a podcast or audio book. The guys who really know about it also use wave pad, another free program.

You can build a "recording booth" out of a box lined with eggshell foam and a Radio Shack microphone suspended in it.

I'd suggest you get this and just fool around with it, figure out what it can do. If you find it intimidating or just can't get any fun out of using it, that tells you something.

If you can make a file you think is pretty cool, then it might be worth exploring.

I'd say the best way to create an audio book would be to approach the drama department of your local JC or college and see if they have students who'd want to do it for school credit and credit in the finished product.

Interesting, by the way. I highlighted, cut and pasted in from a pdf document. Kind of cool that it worked.
