| I'm thinking I should start a column somewhere: Sunday dinner at the Joiners, it's such a regular post, always starting with the menu.
Tonight is was Chicken Breasts a l'Orange (compliments of AllRecipes.com) with Citrus-Garlic Broccoli, my own concoction (sorry, Dick), and Uncle Ben's Ready Rice, Brown, Red, and Wild Rice Blend. the $10 a bottle Cab was by Robert Mondavi.
My daughter must be picking up on something; she volunteered to cook the entree at her house next week: Pork Loin Roast Stuffed with Cranberries and I Don't Remember what Else. I volunteered vegetables; Lynn suggested asparagus and sweet potatoes. Linda (her mom-in-law) chipped in homemade applesauce. It is going to be a good evening.
Back to the topic. We were discussing the football game that Chris and his dad, Clint, were sneaking into the picture through the TV armoire next to my dining room table. Lynn has a rule, which I uphold for her sake, that emergency football game tune-ins must be muted.
I was the one who brought up Joe Montana, commenting on our discussion here.Things meandered slowly to the Cowboys, and their early quarterbacks, a discussion, which to my consternation, generally leads to Roger Staubach. Personally, as an old (very old) Don Meredith fan, that always disturbs me. Why, my former husband and I were right here in San Antonio, in 1968, at the original Hemisfair - I told you a while back that there were more Hemisfair stories coming - conversing, live and upfront, with Don Meredith about the then current Cowboys' season.
A memory kept popping up. It's a memory I can explain more about later. First, I have a question.
What can anybody out there tell me about Don Meridith's predecessor? Who was, and what do you know about, the first quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys?

| That's right, Marie. Back in the early 60's, before Bill and I married, we went to Dallas for OU weekend (I stayed with his sister at her apartment there - it was the early 60's, after all). Four of us had dinner at a then popular steakhouse, and our friend, David, turned to Bill and whispered that he believed Eddie LeBaron was seated at the next table. I had never, at that time, been a fan of pro football, and had no idea who that was, but Bill looked over and agreed, and we spent the rest of the dinner speaking in hushed whispers, at least until he and the rest of his table left. After they were gone, David asked our server, who confirmed their suspicions. I remember he was a nice looking man, very short and slight for a professional athlete.

| You ladies are discussing modern-day football, not ancient football. I saw my first game in 1936. The star of the game, Dain Clay, went on to play four years as centerfielder for the Cincinnati Reds. A week ago I saw a game at the same field, which is a mere four blocks from where we live. I am updating the football book I did on the local high school team (1893 through 2005). A major job as along with updating the records I am rewriting all the text. I am glad to have missed the meal at your house, Ann, but would enjoy the one at your daughter's if it were up here in the Western Reserve rather than Texas. It seems to me that Marie missed her big chance by not flirting with that 6-7 player. She might now be rich and famous unless he accidently stepped on her one day. |

| Come on tall people cant't have bad armpits. Tall people are perfect people.
This tall person does have one imperfection--she knows nothng about football.
She likes Ann though and that is why she is here yapping. |

| In that case I'm glad I'm not that tall. There is a race driver named Justin Wilson who is several inches above six feet tall. This is most inconvenient because the Indy cars are designed for drivers about 5-9 or 5-10. |

I was about ten years older than John Alt when I met him, and I've always preferred older men. Those football players I met, although huge, were kids to me (damn big kids, but kids.) Kind of like my sons' friends who left their shoes by our front door when they came in. Both of my feet would fit in one of their shoes with room to spare. The one "boy" was 6'4" and wore size 15 canoes...oops, I mean shoes. Carol and I were eye to eye! I loved it! And at this point in our lives I'm sure anyone trying to step on us would be at serious risk. I like being my height. I'm just tall enough that my feet reach the ground. Some things are annoying however; chairs built for average size people mean my feet don't always touch the ground. (I'm serious!) And tall peoples' armpits are my nose level on crowded elevators (not always a good thing.) Oddly enough, I'm the perfect height for tall people to lean on (and they
often do!) Marie started it. The short people do this, then blame the tall ones for picking on them--old trick. |

I had expected maybe a question about "Hullaballo, Caneck, Caneck," at least from across the pond.

| When you are right you are right--it is all my fault. I read what Maries said and responded to it.
After this I will ignore poor, short Marie? Will I be right or wrong then?

| Shelagh, now you're thinking of an episode from "The Vicar of Dibley." One of the great comedy series, by the way. I almost smile just thinking of some of the scenes.
Ann, I knew what you were talking about. |
