Great story! You have the makings of a fine short story here.
I go through this with some things I like. I'll say, "If someone really likes something, price shouldn't matter." You can imagine how far I get with that line.

My mom is the same way about some grocery items. Others she doesn't care what the price is, she's going to buy it. Funny creatures, humans.

I lived on a sailboat in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic with two teenage sons, both tall and blond, very attractive young men. Bananas were surprisingly not cheap even though they grew madly everywhere. At least for our budget, they were not cheap.

One day a huge freighter loaded with green bananas misjudged the tide and was aground on a sandbar. I watched with amusement as the townspeople started to gather on shore with anything that would float, waiting. They waited patiently for about six hours.

Their reward followed. To lighten the freighter, the banana stalks were tossed overboard, less costly than further damage and towing, I guess. Soon, the entire harbor was covered with all those beautiful, dark people floating on baskets and coolers and logs and boards and floats and just swimming. Among them were my two blond sons, equally excited about the stalks of green bananas for free. I could see them in that floating humanity, hauling their bananas into their small dinghy, piling them higher and higher, the sides dipping ever lower into the water.

They made it back to the dock - almost. Just before unloading their "catch," and with them aboard, the dinghy sank. The dock boys quickly dove over the wall and brought up the dinghy and the few stalks of bananas that didn't float back up. My sons divided their bananas equally with the dock boys who grinned happily, their stalks bigger than they were.

I called it the day the town of Puerto Plata went bananas. The bottom fell out of the banana market; you could buy one anywhere for a penny. We ate so many bananas it was a long time after they were finally gone before I was interested in any more.

I never know the price because I would have to put my classes on to see it.

Great stories. Phil and dk.

Great story about bananas.

There are those who said, "When the price of cigarettes go over $1.00 a pack, I'll stop smoking."
Then they raised their sights and said, "When the price of cigarettes go over $2.00 a pack, I'll stop smoking."
And then......

There are some things that cause a person to raise their benchmarks or simply give up.

I didn't realize there are so many tales about bananas that would make excellent short stories. Just add one murder and there it is.
