A question for Alj Empty
PostSubject: A question for Alj   A question for Alj EmptyWed Jan 15, 2014 8:22 am

In one of my stories, one of the characters is a Judge. I call him Judge with the J in upper case. Should the J be lower case?
Here is an example:  The Judge said, "bla, blaa."

A teacher told me it should be lower case?

If it proceeds the judge's name it should be a capital otherwise lowercase, e.g., Judge Thomas, Sir Thomas, Major Thomas, Captain Thomas.

The judge was about to pronounce the sentence.

Yes sir, no sir, three bags full, sir.

The major was present at the meeting.

The captain went down with his ship.

What Shelagh said, with one addition. If you refer directly to a judge by that name, it is a title, even if you do not include a given name:

I object, Judge; my opponent is badgering the witness.

(Please note the semicolon, BTW, Shelagh)  Very Happy

I used to have that trouble with Mother and Father.
Mother rushed through the door. Your mother was right behind.
