- Just returned from an afternoon of shopping. Went by Barnes & Nobel and enjoyed looking at titles. One that I think may be useful, is "Try re-booting yourself."
As I stood outside a ladies store waiting for my daughter to finish her shopping, A window-washer started chatting with me and got into current politics. He said, "You're not from around here, are you?" I said no, I'm visiting here from Germany. He said, "Do they have democracy over there?" I bit my tongue at the response begging to spring forth. I only said that nothing can compare to the democracy in America. He seemed satisfied with that.
Went to Lowes to buy a cordless drill for my son-in-law. Saw various models, most with foreign named manufactures. Wanting to buy American, I selected a Black & Decker brand. After the purchase I learned that Black & Decker is no longer produced in America. Is there a source/list for products actually manufactured in America?
When people say, "Buy American Products" how does one know what products are manufactured in America? Assembled is not the same as manufactured.
I got into a kind of opposite thing, Abe, back in 198 - uummm- 1. I had just moved to Houston and my barely 4 year-old- Pontiac was dying, encouraged, perhaps by my getting caught out in a flash flood and my engine getting waterlogged, but more, I think to the "planned obsolescence" attitude of the time. I decided to be a member of the universe and purchased a Volkswagen Rabbit, just to show the American car makers that I was not confined to their machinations (is there a pun in that?) Anyway, for the first six months after, I found immense pleasure in driving this masterfully designed automotive machine, until, one day, I drove home in another southeast Texas rainstorm (not unlike the one a few years earlier that had messed up my Pontiac.) I determined from my past experience that, whatever, I should keep my foot on the gas pedal until I got home. I managed to make it to my driveway, and ran as quickly as I could into my dry house. Lynn was there, having just been bussed home from school, and we were about to start a conversation when her soap opera got interrupted by a breaking news announcement that Anwar Sadat had been assassinated, and, almost simultaneously, by an incredibly loud "whap" and a flickering of power. Lynn and I huddled on the sofa until the storm resided (that hapens quickly in this state, weather comes up fast, leaves its mark, and like a guerrilla fighter, sneaks away.) We finally ventured out onto the front porch and saw where lightening had struck a neighbor's tree, dangerously close to my innocent little rabbit. All looked well, though, in the aftermath, so we went inside and started preparing dinner, knowing Susan and David would soon be home and hungry. It wasn't until the next morning, when I went to my finely made German car, and tried to start it, that I saw the extent of the problem. When I turned the key in the ignition, the only thing that happened was that the dashboard immediately lit up. Aside from that, total silence. I got out of the car and walked around it, trying to ascertain the problem. As I rounded the car to the back side opposite the driver, I notice a slight discoloration, an irregular but somewhat circular spot just over an inch in diameter. In the center of the spot, a very small dot indicated that the enamel had been chipped away to show the steel underneath. I turned away from the car, attempting to follow a line, and realized that the little dicoloration was directly in line with the exposed, raw, core of the very large pine tree next to my driveway - a tree on the edge of my neighbor's property that had obviously absorbed the lightening strike, but not quite. It did not take long to realize that the tree had deflected the lightening onto that back right corner of my beloved Rabbit (and yes, for those of you who drive in the UK, I said right side.) The only thing in the car that worked was the battery, and it had been recharged into fine shape. The insurance company and the car dealer's repair shop agreed to fix the car, but the dealer reneged on the maintenance agreement, saying any future repairs on my 6-month-old car were on me. My principal advised my to ditch the car right away, but since it was a long way from being paid for, I decided not to listen to him. It took me a year-and-a-half to figure out that he had been right. Everything that could go wrong with that car did, and I learned, during the process, that German car parts are hard to find in the US, and extremely expensive when you manage to do so. We called that sucker Anwar until the day we traded him in on a brand, shining new '83 Chevrolet Cavalier. Today I buy American, mostly, but it still pi**es me off. we all ought to be able to be free to buy the best product we can afford, no matter who makes it. Our world is growing ever smaller and buying quality products should not be the way that i encountered with my little German car. We desperately need to learn more about cooperation. Ann

| The book has been submitted to iPad and Nook. I don't know how long it takes to be reviewed. It might not pass the review, but if it does, it should be on B&N and in the Apple store before Christmas. |

Are your knees getting better yet?
Sorry Alice I was away for a while, things to do but I shall now eat more if any is left? My knees are faithfully telling me how cold and damp the weather is (ouch!). |

| David ,
Dark chocolate is supposed to help. Try some for real and let us know the result. I wonder how long were you in rehab? I have arthritis in an old back injury and physical therapy is helping that. |

| I do eat dark chocolate Alice but I've never noticed any changes. The condition damages the lining of cartilage in the joint which does not grow back you can only manage the condition to help preserve what cartilage you have. They tell me that depression is common with the condition and I do suffer from that but I am loath to try antidepressants as they can take ages to come off. My wife is on them and she has had to try different ones before finding something that helps. |

| Oh, David , I am so sorry. You are right about the pills, they are very hard to quit. I was so frightened before my brain surgery, I asked for an anxiety reliever. It only made maters worse so I stopped it.
I hope something helps you soon.

| Shelagh,
Too funny! You said my book might not pass a review--I thought I must not have written it right.
I realized you were sleeping peacefully while I was freaking out so I wished you bad dreams and went to sleep myself after dday 50627 told me it was about like getting a book on Kindle.
Misunderstandings abound.

| Dear David,
I have done this and know it works. Take a small hand towel and sew it like a pillow case. Fill it with rice and sew up the end. Heat it in the microwave for three minutes. Put it on your knees with your feet on an ottoman. It is nice to make two of these because of having two knees. Relax.
My son in law has had both knees replaced. He told me about this because of my back. The rice creates warm, moist heat. I hope this helps you.
Love, Betty |
