'Man of Steel' star Henry Cavill recalls being 'fat' during his childhood: 'I’ve always been worried about my weight'
Quote :
Before Henry Cavill became the Man of Steel, he was a pudgy kid saving the likes of average citizens like Russell Crowe. In an advance copy of the June/July issue of Details magazine, Cavill recounts meeting Crowe way back when he was attending boarding school....
Crowe “was on campus filming ‘Proof of Life.’ … Everyone was standing in a semicircle, and I thought, ‘We look ridiculous, staring like he’s some kind of prize pony. So I walked up and said, ‘Hi, my name is Henry. I’m thinking of becoming an actor. What’s the acting world like?’ He said something like, ‘Sometimes it’s great. Sometimes it’s not so great. It’s fun acting. And they pay well.’ Then everyone ran up and asked for autographs, and I turned to Russell and said, ‘Run.’ ”
Several days later, Cavill received a package from Crowe that contained snacks, a rugby jersey and a CD of the actor's band. “There was also a signed note," Cavell reveals. "It said, ‘Dear Henry, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.’ ”
Cavill reveals he was actually up for Superman role before: 'I was very close to getting the job, and then the director changed and I was no longer part of the plan.'
Years later, when filming began on “Man of Steel,” with Crowe playing Superman's dad Jor-El, Cavill reminded Crowe of the day they met, saying, “I was the fat one who didn’t ask for your autograph.’ ” Crowe remembered.
Weight has always been a struggle for Cavill, who admits to the magazine that he was on the heavier side during his childhood. "I was fat," he says. "I was Fat Cavill."
After landing his first role in the 2002 film adaptation of "The Count of Monte Cristo" at age 17, Cavill got whipped into shape.
"I lost one and a half stone" — 21 pounds — "and I wasn't Fat Cavill anymore," he says.
But to play the Man of Steel on the big screen, the actor was forced to bulk up with help from a diet that included consuming 5,000 calories a day.
“I will say I was a lot bigger as Superman…A lot bigger," he notes. "I’m not saying how much. It’s modesty about the weight — I’ve always been worried about my weight — but I also don’t want to invite that debate: Henry weighs this, so he’s the perfect Superman. Or, Henry doesn’t weigh this, and therefore he’s not believable in the role.”
With his career set to skyrocket after the June 14 release of the superhero flick, Cavill remains modest about his future in Hollywood.
“The hardest part of acting…is not being guaranteed work," he says. "Every job could be your last."
I think he got that last bit from Mr. Crowe, too. Have definitely heard it attributed to him.

Another Great Day motivator by Ralph Marston: With life as it is, make joy
Be sure to watch the whole thing - uplifting images of nature as well as more joyful words and advice.
There is no need to fight or run away, to feel bitter or to make excuses, to give up, to back down, or to fall into a negative mindset. You have life, and you always have the ability to make joy.
Smile, and warm the world around you. Breathe deeply, gently, and peacefully feel the miracle of your own existence.
Live life as it comes. And with it, every bit of it, make joy.
You can get the recipe from the link. Here is a picture of my version:

Got up at 4:30 this morning to see the Rabbitohs win over the Knights 25-18 via Livestream on my computer. It was a tense game. I was exhausted by the time it was over, just from watching.
It's been a busy Saturday - typical of the 1st day of the month and all the duties of such days.
I am joyously headed to bed early, and wish everyone a very good night.
See you in the morning

Can I convert you to Rugby Union, Ann? The Lions (a team selected from all four UK national sides and Eire) will be touring Australia over the next five weeks. It's the 125th tour of the British & Irish Lions. The test matches against the Australian Wallabies are June 22, June 29 and July 6.
One of the players, Brian O'Driscoll, is heading on his fourth British & Irish Lions tour - only the third player in 125 years to do that after five-times tourists Willie John McBride and Mike Gibson. He is also the second most capped player in rugby union history with 131 Test appearances – 125 for Ireland and 6 with the British & Irish Lions – and the game’s seventh highest Test try scorer with Bryan Habana on 47. He has captained Ireland to 52 wins in 83 matches, including four Triple Crowns and the 2009 Grand Slam, and was the Lions tour captain in New Zealand in 2005.
O'Driscoll encapsulates the brilliance of the nation of your ancestors. This will be his last appearance in a Lions' shirt. He was badly injured by a spear tackle in the opening minutes of the first Test on the 2005 tour of New Zealand, an injury that was so severe it was thought that it might be the end of his glittering career. Here's a video of the tackle that could have broken his neck:
You can read about his hopes for the 2013 tour here:

Thank you, Shelagh. I will read about the tour.
I've seen that tackle, just recently. It was used on the Raggitohs fullback, Greg Inglis, considered one of Australia's finest.
Fortunately, he got up, twisted his neck around a few times, and finished the game. The player who threw the tackle was suspended for five games.

I was just assigned writing about the local Naples Rugby Club, the Hammerheads. First, I didn't even know they played Rugby in the U.S. (I know; head in the sand on that one). Second, what do I know about the sport? I should send you guys my article to see if it reads okay. What do you think? If I post it somewhere, will you take a look? It's only 500 words. :-)

You should probably send it to Shelagh. I have never watched a Rugby union game, but will, probably, soon. I have heard that Rugby league is easier to follow for Americans because it is closer to our football. I can generally keep up, but am still learning the fine-line aspects of the game.
That's about as much as I can tell you, except for the fact that Crowe's South Sydney Rabbitohs played an exhibition game against England's Leeds Rhinos at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville in 2008. Leeds won. Crowe had only bought the South Sydney team a couple of years earlier. His influence on improving the team had just begun. The outcome might be different now - or not. You might check with that school.

North face of Enchanted Rock in the distance behind a field of Indian Blankets
This would be just about the spot where Daniel and Jake built their original double-pen dog trot cabin.
Not quite, though. The cabin would have been on the top of a ridge several yards behind that fence.

Beautiful picture, Ann,
Today, we have Kenzie. She is joy, pure joy. These past six months have flown by. I am so thankful for a grandchild nearby.

Treasure every minute, Alice. They grow so fast. Six months old seems yesterday, but it was almost 4 years ago
and Jaycie is nearly four-and-a-half now.

Don't know if "sweet" is the word, Alice. She can be, when she wants to be. She is also her Grannie Annie's granddaughter. She has a lot of determination, and knows when and how to get her needs met.

Shelagh proofed my Rugby article and added some great info. She did it with great alacrity, too. What a generous person! I wanted to do something in return and she said, "pass it on."

Please do - Shelagh has challenged me to learn more about Rugby Union. What a cool way to do that.
It still surprises me that I am interested in any form of such a sport. I thought I gave up on it a half-century ago.

Rugby wasn't Mr. Crowe's first sport:
His two first cousins, Jeff and Martin Crowe, now retired, were famous professional cricket players in New Zealand.
It was kind of assumed that their younger cousin would follow in their footsteps. He took a lot of flack for wanting to be a poet when he grew up. The poet became a rock lyricist, then a singer, then a musical stage actor before he made his first film, The Crossing, (at 25) and found his true calling.
