I think we are going to see more of it here next. As long as the governments continue to maintain the status quo where the rich get bailouts and tax cuts and everybody else gets benefit cuts and tax increases, we are going to see more and more people reaching the frustration point.

Most of the protestors in London remained peaceful. Only a few resorted to violence.

I wouldn't be shocked ! I'm glad I'm older not younger,
I don't think many people in this country would put up
with mass riots....

Demonstrations are common here. Resurrection CIty, I remember well. Riots have been here too. Hope they do not return, but who would know?

I think the government would have the nerve
to do like they did in Kent state, start shooting,
and as everyone has seen " You Don't Shoot

Maybe we could try to figure out why so many people in so many places have reached the point that they feel they have no other choice but to protest. Maybe we could listen to what they have been trying to say - give them a voice.

Dear E. Don,
I worry about that. There is a lot of middle of the road people who expound about change. The truth is that they are sitting there on a fence of middle class and are not about to risk the spot.

Under that spot are people who struggle each day to pay the rent, buy the groceries and hope their children will get better without going to a doctor.

The way I see it, the people who are what is known as middle class, have worked so hard for the position that they are not very willing to stand up and be counted for change. They may hope for it, but voting may be another thing. Not a single one of the people I know know what the hell any candidate stands for, what they are apt to try to do. We are bombarded by crap ads no matter want the election is for. It is a flim-flam game. " Dazzle me with your bullshit! "

I do not like it one bit.

Love,
Betty

The thing is, Betty, the number of people who are "under that spot" keeps growing, and fewer and fewer are in a comfortable enough position to stay on that fence.

The welfare state Europeans are upset that their government cheese is being cut, just like the protestors in Wisconsin. Their rich subsidies, awarded by weak legislators seeking votes, are unsustainable. Adults are now in charge, and the children are tantrumming.

Re the "rich get bailouts and tax cuts" school of thought. The WSJ had a good article recently about how the "rich" (defined as $500K/yr) in California pay most of the income taxes there. Californina got too dependent on them, which made it vulnerable to the downfall of the rich in the financial meltdown a few years ago. Apparently this population has the most volatile income.

I don't blame the London folks for being ticked. After all, their standard of living is being reduced
and they have to spend money for Lybia. No one likes to have less money. I don't see anyone happy if they have less.

The reason the rich pay most of the taxes is because they have the money to do it. They always yell, "Poor me.!"

Good post Alice.

If there are any babies crying, they are the rich babies. They want to be coddled. The trickle-down thing occurs when their bottles spring a leak. It often occurs at the nipples from too much sucking.

Our budget saw the government give us 1p off the cost of fuel. Considering that in January it was raised by 5p we feel like we have been duped.
Retailers often raise their prices on goods just before they have a sale that way they can give the illusion of giving us a real bargain.

No the feeling here is that again the Government are taxing the less well off and supporting the wealthy, that will never change because it is wealth that rules a nation in reality. Shocked

The title of this thread, "London Rampage" could be appropriate if my grand kids get loose.
My daughter, her husband and my two grandchildren left last night for London. On thursday they will continue their trip to Germany. In the meanwhile, they will be exploring London's many attractions. If the authors in the UK see some crazy Americans wandering the streets, they may be the Long family.

The problem is with the word class. There is no class. There are good people, and there are bad people Good people come in last.
God says of man..."Man can not guide his own footsteps."
That has proven to be true.

E. Don Harpe wrote:
"The richest 400 people in the US (as identified by Forbes Magazine) actually have more wealth than half of Americans combined. That means 400 people have more money than 155 million regular people." This comment was checked and confirmed by Politifact – a website dedicated to fact checking the truth of political statements.

The right wing always mouths the same old talking point about the wealthy paying the most in taxes. They've heard that over and over on Fox News and from the talking heads who tell them what to think, so it must be so. I don't really know if it's true or not, but if the richest 400 people have more wealth than 155 million Americans, then they should be paying most of the taxes. That's the way it's supposed to work, isn't each? Each pays acccording to their ability to pay?

That giant sucking sound isn't just the sound of corporations sending jobs out of the country, as Abe said it's the sound of the wealthy sucking at the teat of the government. In the past 30 or so years there's been a huge redistribution of wealth in this country, and it's been going from the working class to the wealthy. They've had their hands in our pockets long enough, I say it's time for a true redistribution, take it all from them and give it back to the working people they stole it from, and we'll see the entire country prosper again, and not just those wealthy who get their million dollar welfare checks every year.

Great post, E. Don

Dom, the problem is, in the current worldview, "class" is an all too real concept. Of course it should not be. How do we go about changing that?

Good Post, Don.

The poor get duped into voting for the super rich whose aim is to keep the poor, poor and ignorant.

People are controlled when kept in ignorance. Information such as Don posted needs more publicity.

People want to impress the wealthy, so they agree with them. Agreeing with a poor person is not prestiigious.

Bad/ sad situation.
