PostSubject: A complete story in six words   A complete story in six words EmptyWed Jun 11, 2008 5:18 am

A few months ago there was a discussion on Criminal Brief (a great site for short story writers) about Hemingway's claim that he could write a complete story in six words. When challenged to do so he wrote:

For Sale: Baby shoes. Never used.

Some people thought it was a complete story, others did not and felt more needed to be said.
In my opinion, adding anything more would destroy the purpose of making the reader create a picture in his mind. The poignancy would be lost. It would be possible, of course, to write a detailed account of the events leading up to the placing of the ad, but I feel Hemingway did it best.
What do you think? Could you write a better story in six words?

I think Hemingway created a thought that allowed someone to come up with their own story.

In school we were told our papers should answer those who, why, what, where, when, how questions.

For Sale. Baby shoes. Never used. Doesn't answer any questions except for what.

It leaves a lot unsaid and allows people to jump to conclusions. Perhaps the wrong one.

It does open the imagination and allows the reader to guess why they are for sale. But it isn't really a story.

It is more of a springboard.

It could be someone bought them as a gift. Maybe the shoes are pink and the lucky couple had a boy.
Maybe a couple received too many pairs of shoes at the baby shower and the kid just never wore them.
Maybe an enterprising person bought 30 pairs of babyshoes on clearance and is now selling them on Ebay to make a profit.
It could be something more tragic, the shoes were bought for a baby who never came or didn't survive.

Mr. Julius managed to say quite a bit with only three words:
Veni, Vidi, Vici

That's three Latin words (six English words). I'll try five (not as good as Hemmingway or Caesar):

Woman found dead. Husband missing.

I totally think those six words tell a story, Dick. As soon as I read them, I said to myself, "Aw", because the image that popped into my mind was that a couple was expecting a baby, and for some reason it died. Of course you don't know why or aything like that, but it is only six words. It worked for me.

Smith magazine has really been cleaning up with this concept now that they've published a book with readers' contributions.

I think it is a short story. It is intriguiing and can be read in one sitting. It would be an adequate springboard into a longer story, sure, but actually has the ability to capture the interest of a reader.
Could I write a better story in six words? Yes, I could write a better story in six words. Would I? Probably not, since so much of what I do is paid by the word...

I did actually take a couple of cracks at this, but couldn't get below nine words without sounding like a commercial. Shocked

I just got up, haven't had my coffee yet, and you want to put my mind to work! So no, I could not do any better, in fact, could not even match it.
