| For tomorrow's family dinner: pork tenderloins, queso fresco, dried ancho chilis, red onion, fresh corn on the cob.
(I already had: green beans, cherry tomatoes, canned tomatoes, and brown rice.)
See the new thread on Favorite Recipes for why.

| Joe, do you buy lots of annuals or do you still plant perennials and landscape items in your yard? I went to Walmart grocery shopping today and part of my mission was to buy garden plants. I was disappointed to see they only had tomatoes. I bought some, plus a package of pea seeds. I've given up on corn. It just doesn't grow for me anymore. |

| Betty -they're blackberries. Juicy, sweet blackberries that run purple juice down your chin if you let them.
Shelagh, your husband's pub sends him flowers and champagne? One of mine sends me a Christmas card that doesn't even have my name or their sigs on it, lol. The other doesn't communicate at all except every few years to ask if I'll do a new edition. |

| 4/19/2010 LC.. I just mulch around the plants, the rest is grass, Miss Dusty love it. The compound I live in has a company that comes around to take care of the grounds and come into each garden and cut the grass, but I make sure I'm there to watch, two years ago one guy who didn't speak English cut down two Russian Sage bushes, I was " Furious !"... Cheers..Joe |

I received this message in an email (not for the first time!): TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED THE 1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's!!
First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant.
They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can and didn't get tested for diabetes.
Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-base paints.
We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had baseball caps not helmets on our heads.
As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, no booster seats, no seat belts, no air bags, bald tires and sometimes no brakes.
Riding in the back of a pick-up truck on a warm day was always a special treat.
We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle.
We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and no one actually died from this.
We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter and bacon. We drank Kool-Aid made with real white sugar. And, we weren't overweight. WHY?
Because we were always outside playing...that's why!
We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.
No one was able to reach us all day... and we were O.K.
We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride them down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.
We did not have Play stations, Nintendo's and X-boxes. There were no video games, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's, no cell phones,
No personal computers, no Internet and no chat rooms.
WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!
We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.
We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.
We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes..
We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them.
Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!
The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!
These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever.
The past 50 years have seen an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.
If YOU are one of them, CONGRATULATIONS!
You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good.
While you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave and lucky their parents were. I bolded the text that seems to not apply to writers and authors. As a group, they deal with disappointment, rejection and failure badly. If they don't make it into the team (find a top publisher), they sulk and, even if they do sign with a top house, they expect to be treated equally among all other authors. It doesn't happen. Not in business, not in the publishing business. I knew of my husband's publishing success and knew how hard he worked to accomplish it. My own endeavours required less time, less research and less cost. I could argue that there's an element of creativity in my stories that is missing in his textbooks, but that only makes my work different to his; it does not lift me above my competitors writing works of fiction. My expectations were to see my books published at no cost to me. Provided I could do that, I would succeed. I did exactly what I set out to do. If my writing was good enough to make a profit for a commercial publisher, they would pick up the work. They haven't done so. I have to conclude that my work isn't good enough. Not the standard of writing, but the commercial viability of my stories. I know what I would have to do to become a success. I'm not prepared to do it. I do not share the dogged determination of those who will not give up until they become the successful authors they yearn to be. |

Shelagh.. I was born in 1948 , so I know the good old days, it was a better time. I love the article.. Cheers.Joe It was a different time, and there is much to miss, but many of those very things that were a part of our freedom then, we know more about now. And that is often a good thing. We remember because we survived. There were those who did not. I like the article; I miss some of that freedom. I like the lines Shelagh emphasized, about dealing with disappointment and being responsible, but we can still choose to do those things today, even with our computers and cell phones and advanced cancer treatments and air bags. (I'm a bit older than you, Joe. I was born in 1943.) It's like Sarah Ban Breathnach has said, if you had made different choices, you cannot know if your life would have been better or worse. You can only say it has been different. I agree that there were some good things about the old days. I think there are some good things about the new days, too. Just me. Ann |

| I was shopping this morning at the nearby supermarket for stuff that would be healthy, but no effort, since I am not feeling well. I found these delightful paper plates and napkins. I bought a bunch, especially of the napkins, since I have some peony bowls. I think I will use the napkins and my bowls for the Sunday family dinner and serve a pot of cassoulet. Ann |

| I am an impulse buyer. I love blown glass.
My daughter and I went to a small flee market. It did not have a lot to offer, but the first booth displayed lovely blown glass critters. Frogs in multicolor greens, dragons, and all beautiful objects. I had to!
I bought a dragon and a little goldfish.
My daughter said, "Mom, do you know what these are?"
They are marijuana smoking pipes. How lovely they are. I bought them because they are beautiful.
Love, Betty |
