| Did you do as you were told, or did you disobey, defy and fight over everything?
Just curious, as usual.

| I found it safer to do as I was told. At least when I was being watched. And the rest of the time try hard not to get caught doing what I shouldn't. |

Alice...
When I grew up in the mid 1950's you did what you were told, on Sunday nights you had to be in the house for dinner by 6 PM , to bed by 8 PM , school was the next day. I remember once we were all in the back yard carrying on creating a racket , we were suppose to go to the movies ( Till this day I don't remember what movie, I do know I wanted to see it very badly) My step- father came out and said: " No going to the movies ! " that hurt ! .....
Cheers..Joe.. |

| Mom had a ring on every finger, a nasty broom stick and we had a weeping willow tree, which produced great switches.
I managed the weather the storms, occationally. |

| E. Don. Your persistent book promotion is a lesson for us all! By the way, I changed my mind about friends on forums - it's possible. Now, as regards the topic: my aunt told me I was such a perfect little girl in my dresses and smocks and shoes without scuff marks that she worried about me. Pretty much, that set the pattern; I spent my life trying to do the right thing and, of course, failing often. My worst rebellions seemed to be in the company I kept; yet, against all odds, I was usually a good influence on those I wished to emulate in the other direction. |

| DK, I try not to miss an opportunity to promote my books and my short stories. And I do think of several people here and at a few other places as my friends. We share many of the same interests, talk to a lot of the same people, and all that's missing is the face to face time. |

| 75 to 80% of the time, I was a complacent "little lady," as my dad would say, following all the rules, smiling, playing dolls and dress-up. But once in a while, the one Mom called "the troublemaker" would pop out, and I would morph into this rude, defiant, and angry little person, who would dare them to punish her for being a bad little girl, and they would, and I would cry for awhile, and accept their judgments, and go back to being Snow White, keeping Rose Red contained inside until the next time I couldn't take it anymore.
Snow White and Rose Red was my second favorite fairy tale after just plain Snow White.

| A little plug for my book. Flow On Sweet Missouri is my historical novel beginning with my great-grandmother's birth at the outbreak of the Civil War and ending when my mother brought me home from the hospital. There had been generations of possessive women in my heritage, and my great-grandmother tells my mother to break the pattern and give me my freedom to be who I am.
My daughter commented on pictures of my mother and father, how young and rested they looked before they had me and how tired they look in pictures with me.
I wasn't too much a terror though. We lived with my grandparents so I was under the thumb of my possessive grandmother in an austere household. I spent a lot of time alone or in the basement in my grandfather's shop. It was a good childhood, and I might have been a good child sometimes.

| It's interesting to see how different our childhoods all were, seeing that the women here on this board all share that trait of independence, however our childhoods influenced the trait coming out.

| Ann,
Do you think our childhoods turned us into rebels?
I was a very cooperative child--didn't dare to be any other way. Now I feel like it is time to do what I want. |
