| This work of graphic art shows my concept for a flywheel driven spaceship. The two flywheels are located at the back of the craft. They would have to be made of heavy material such as tungsten or iridium and would have to be spun up to very high speeds before the ship took off. This ship would be purely for outer space use and would not land on planets itself. The flywheels would drive an impeller located in the rocket nozzle at the very back and this would expell the fuel, which would be a heavy gas like xenon stored in liquid form in the fuel tank (the sphere in the middle of the ship). The purpose of storing it in liquid form is to increase the amount of fuel it can carry. The propultion of the ship works in accordence to the basic laws of motion, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Therefore, the material being thrust out the back of the ship drives it forward. The reason for using a heavy gas is it can transfer more energy at a given velocity than a light gas. In adition to powering the main engine, the flywheels would also turn the ship's electrical generators and some of that electricity would be used to drive a large electrical motor at the front of the craft that would spin the cabin, thus creating artificial gravity for the crew (the cabin is the part with the yellow dots on it). The name on the fuel tank is Latin for "Star Voyager." |
