9/5/2009 Hi Everyone... Who is your favorite artist and why ? I'll go first. Van Gogh - There are certain paintings he did I thought were great, there's one called " Vincent's Chair," I actually copied it, it took long research to figure out the colors in his work, I had found a site and blew it up to see exactly how he did it, that's one painting I won't give away, I'll see if I can post it. Monet - I love the serenity of his work. I used to work at The Metropolitan Museum Of Art many years ago, that's how I got started in painting, now I'm trying to learn how to do watercolor, which I find so beautiful... Cheers..Joe..

Sixty feet long? Amazing. Having flunked art in grade school, I admit to being stupid on the subject. I like Joe's picture and like the paintings of Monet. If forced to pick a favorite it would be Joel Spector, who does a lot of the artwork for Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine. If forced to pick one I like the least it would be Alice's favorite, Kinkade.

9/5/2009 Marie.. What I don't understand about watercolors is the mixing ? And what kind of paper to use ? I've seen some beautiful ones by artists who do flowers, I would love to copy my paintings in watercolors. Cheers..Joe...

Life itself is my favorite artist. Each dawn is a fresh vista of anticipation for the day ahead. Each sun set an introduction to a landscape of sound and smell that pierces the darkness. A fresh canvas every day, never the same artwork twice. Perpetual artistic renewal created by nature. Lovely

Any of the artists of the Hudson River School, sometimes called the first American art group, properly ought to be called the first European American group. They painted romantic landscapes, mostly of the Catskill Mountains, during the early 1800's (Just hit me; this is the same area where my son and daughter-in-law met, fell in love, and married.) This painting, by Ashur Durand, is called Kindred Spirits, and shows his two closest friends, fellow painter Thomas Cole and their close friend, poet William Cullen Bryant: Romanticism in both art and poetry usually included a spiritual look at the natural world as a reflection of God's handiwork. The opening lines of Bryant's poem, "Thanatopsis," reflects that theme: "To him who in the love of Nature holds Communion with her visible forms, she speaks A various language; for his gayer hours She has a voice of gladness, and a smile And eloquence of beauty, and she glides Into his darker musings, with a mild And healing sympathy, that steals away Their sharpness, ere he is aware..." http://www.poetry-archive.com/b/thanatopsis.html Ann

The Catskills are my favorite mountains. In Cooperstown we lived in the Northern Catskills. By driving a few miles south and crossing the Susquehanna River we were in the heart of the Catskills. By driving a few miles north and crossing the Mohawk River we were in the Adirondacks. Beautiful country, intelligent, informed people.

| My daughter-in-law grew up in Middletown, She and Dave lived in Bloomingburg for several years. That's a bit further south than Cooperstown, I think,in the foothills. Dave went to grad school at RPI, outside of Albany. We have lost him to NY State forever, no matter how often his father asks him when he's moving back to Texas.

I can understand why. For sheer beauty nothing tops upstate New York. The same goes for the people. I once saw R.P.I. play a home football game with the Coast Guard Academy. Wonderful campus, but the most beautiful of all is Colgate in Hamilton, N.Y.
