I have thought of starting a thread titled:

"What kind of books does LC write?

No, please don't. We don't need any more antagonism over what members here do or do not write. I had known for quite some time about Chris Turkel's books. I only posted the links because you asked, Alice, and I thought it might put an end to all the speculation. Instead, it caused a flame war. We don't need any more flaming. I'm sure that if it was in LC's best interest to publicise her books on forums, she would do so. Everything is calm for the moment, let's leave it that way.

James Macdonald is an intelligent man, one I respect, but like everyone else he occasionally makes a statement that would have been better if shortened. So what?

Some people with nothing better to do with their time like to play with semantics and complain that a publisher is a printer or whatever. Who cares?
Jim Macdonald cares and he likes to play with semantics. I was banned from AW in 2006 (for six months). Immediately after I was banned, Jim challenged me to a debate. However, I wasn't allowed to debate on the AW forum. Here's the challenge:

http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26537&page=25#602

Since I was not allowed onto AW, I suggested that the debate should take place on my local town forum, Leyland Town Forum. Jim registered and said that he hadn't -- but he's still a member, though he hasn't made a single post. This is the post he made about trying to join the forum:

http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26537&page=27#665

I set up a forum for the debate and Jim told everyone that they could follow the debate here:

http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26537&page=28#694

This is the actual debate that took place February 18th - 27th 2006:

http://z15.invisionfree.com/Debate/index.php?showtopic=4

The debate was all about semantics. Jim Macdonald was and is obsessed with proving that PA is a vanity press. He claims to have won the debate but he's still posting the same old same old over on AW. If you win, that should be the end of the debate, shouldn't it? Why say more?

Jenna certainly has not sold ten times what I have and I think several people here could say the same. (Not you, or course, turkel...I grasp in vain for ANYTHING you ever sold)

She did sell AW for family reasons. To the leznazi bitch from hell, McAllister.

I go out of my way not to stray into the whole PA spasm, but it wouldn't surprise me to learn that the crusade against it started on her watch. Just a guess. She's just a witch-hunt kind of gal.

Well, that PA board over there is over five years old (with the same people posting on it), so it pre-dates the new ownership.

PA is a seriously weird "publisher," and I can see how folks would be angry about its practices (customer service sure isn't its strong point), but sometimes you have to just let go and move on, yk?

And if some folks are satisfied with what they got out of it, what's the point of following them to other forums to argue about it? It's just weird. And pointless.

I just noticed who started this thread, and as it's a slow Sunday morning, skimmed it from the beginning.

Is this yet another example of people with marginal credits themselves showing others The Way? I mean, where does someone who has next to no writing credits herself get off telling others how to "plot their way to publication" or "what an editor wants?" Fascinating.

LOL -I think she should hook up with the SEO seller who never got within a country mile of a NY publisher, lecturing us how they work. Think of the book they could lulu, I mean publish together. lol

Careful, now. I'm in trouble on the Writers Digest forum for suggesting that advice from those who don't have agents or published work isn't the best to subscribe to.

I REALLY caught hell there, dozens of pissed-off messages, for responding to a chain email about a blog that features interviews with unpublished writers (per se!) and their comments on the industry and how to write successful books.

Well, that would depend on what the advice is about, no? If you're suggesting that advice on how to get an agent or your work published is worth anything coming from non-agented, non-published advisors, well, we'll just agree to disagree.

I'm not sure how you got that, but I'm saying the same thing.

And that people seem to resent it being pointed out.

PostSubject: Re: What An Agent Wants   What An Agent Wants - Page 6 EmptySun Apr 11, 2010 9:07 am

I agree completely about WD. What people are slow to figure out is that they are NOT on the writer's side. They are on the side of the industry. They coddle agents and publishers because they need their listings for their reference books (which they are desperately trying to pretend are still useful in a day of updated, searchable internet sites for agents and markets).

Their articles are generally pap from "insiders" (you can generally trace the writers back to a WD connection). And always advise that writers do whatever the nice agents and editors tell them to, even if it's against writers' interest to do crazy things like grant exclusive looks to proposals for a year or whatever.

Now they are very active in selling "webinars". A recent one was on self-publishing (which is almost an anathema at the mag--the last thing they want is writers moving outside their system of buying books on how to get published and the vanity presses they sell ads to) taught by their Ed in chief...who has never self-published a book in her life, who has never sold fiction and, I beleive, never even sold much freelance work. Those editors in multi-mag machines general come up from pools and scutwork, not writing.

They're a joke.

On the other hand, I get bored and their forum is relaxing. (Although I'm currently under notice there to be "less abrasive"--if you can IMAGINE)
