This past weekend I sat in the pie booth at our local fair, collecting money. This is a community 'doings' and the Grange hosts the pie booth. Who would have thought that making change was so tiring? I slept most of the day Monday. Or was I just having a pie hangover? Or maybe crashing from a 'sugar high'. The ladies who bake the pies are from a family that settled in this area in the 1800's, and the mother used to have a bakery. They have done the pie booth since the fair started about 15 years ago, and their success is famous hereabouts! The pies were delicious, and I should know. I had to have a slice of at least four different flavors. Of course, I also sampled a Hungarian elephant ear each day. I felt I needed something nourishing to mix with all that pie. The Hungarian elephant ear is spread with sour cream, and then loaded up like an open faced taco. Delicious. I brought home 3 full pies and we still have one and a half of them left! Anyhow, I am still recuperating. Maybe I need a piece of that peach pie that is only half gone! I am so glad I am not on a diet (even though it's not a bad idea!).

It is wonderful that you got a day to do something you enjoy! Selling pies and seeing smiling faces. What wonderful experiences! I am so happy for you, Zada! |

It was nice, Sue. I got to see some people I hadn't seen in years. (They never get out this way, and I don't get out of here too often!)

There is a half of a peach pie, and a pumpkin in the fridge. I got two pumpkins, they are my favorite, and the first one was gone by Monday. These ladies are famous for their pie, and some people travel a long way just to buy some. We sold quite a few as whole pies, and many slices. (One lady bought ten pies, and they are probably already in her freezer.) I think we sold more than 700 pies in all. The money raised will go into a scholarship fund.

They never have sweet potato pie up here, Brew. I had some when I lived in Alabama, and it is my 2nd favorite. Just wish there were somewhere to get it. I'm too lazy to make my own.

We just had our first sweet potato pie. John didn't want to eat any but I put it on his plate. I only got one piece out of the entire pie. He decided it was good. *grin*

Dear Zada, Those pie ladies are pure Americana. Where has all of that gone? Now, people try to dress up a pie too much. Remember the old fashioned cobblers. Lots of crust sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon, baked in a big cast iron pan. Reminds me of fried dough. Yeast bread bits twisted off from the dough before it rose, fried in lard. The smell of that bread was never to be forgotten. There was an old black lady that befriended me as a sorry white trash child, inviting me to have abit of that bread with honey. I will never forget that lady, the look of her, the lovely teeth she had, the big smile and her small little porch where she sat looking out. She had a bowl of melted butter to dip the bread into. She is one of the people I would like to thank for her kindness above and beyond. In those days, schools and towns were segretated. We lived on the same side of town as she did, but the white trash felt they were better than she. They were wrong, of course. She had more class than anyone who lived across those tracks. See how pie can divert my mind? Love, Betty

Up here, they call the fried dough 'fry bread', a Native American delicacy favored at almost all tribal gatherings. They even use it to make 'Indian Tacos', topped with all the usual taco fillings. It is much the same as elephant ears that we get at the fairs, smeared with butter and then cinnamon sugar or jams cover the tops. All of it is yummy stuff. I am so glad you had a good friend who would share her bread with you. Shared items are twice blessed.

Cherry pie definitely is tops. Beware of those people who put sweet potatoes in pie. They are the same ones who put chocolate syrup in a martini.

I love pumpkin pie. Not sweet potato pie. It's similar to beet meringue pie.
