VOTE in the U.S. Empty
PostSubject: VOTE in the U.S.   VOTE in the U.S. EmptyMon Nov 03, 2014 11:12 am

VOTE!!! It is our right and privilege as U.S. Citizens for which many wonderful people have fought and died. It's an imperfect political system, but voting is still our mark of freedom. You protect that freedom by voting. You gain your right to praise and complain by voting. Call the party of your choice if you need a ride. Take care of it tonight. Share with all your acquaintances and offer them a ride. I went to early voting. It took me ten minutes. It felt good to pick up an "I Voted" sticker. If you don't vote, you let me make your decisions for you - and you might not like my choices!

I vote.  I saw today the result of the republican effort to keep people from voting, right here in this little berg of Duette.  The people who are there at the voting station are the same people who have been there for thirty odd years.  They know me from living here, they know that I have voted in every elections for thirty years.  Today, if I had not had my picture Id, they would not have allowed me to vote.  There is something going on that is not nice for this country when people cannot vote.  I saw that my friend Mary Goble Preese went to vote and found that her voting station had been suddenly changed from where it was a week ago.  That is wrong...................!

Incredible that so many vote against their own best interests.

Ms. Davis did much better here in Bexar County and other metropolitan areas.  Unfortunately, there are still too many parts of the state where men consider blondes a joke.

Curious to see what the next two years might bring. Something in me thinks this election could backfire if this Republican Congress tries to undo what progress has been made since 2008.

VOTE in the U.S. Empty
PostSubject: Re: VOTE in the U.S.   VOTE in the U.S. EmptyWed Nov 05, 2014 5:11 am

When the Supreme Court made the decision to uphold the voter restriction laws passed in Republican legislatures around the country, saying that there was not enough time for lifting them to not cause more confusion than help, it set the elections up to disenfranchise a large portion of voters who would likely have cast their ballots in favor of Democratic candidates. Add to that the enormous sums of money poured in by wealthy conservatives and super pacs, the outcome of these elections was probably inevitable.

Ironic that the same Supreme Court shot down the Texas abortion laws that made Wendy Davis famous enough to make her a viable gubernatorial candidate. But, in the long run, she is no Ann Richards. Her single-parent status, her feminine features, the long blonde hair, the pink tennis shoes she wore on the floor of the state senate during her prolonged filibuster, attempting to stop the passage of those same abortion laws that the Supreme Court blocked all made her a heroine in the eyes of progressives, but frightened too many conservative voters for her to be able to cross those lines.

Those ironies underscore the chaotic nature of major change. It doesn't happen in a straight line. There are always giant steps backward in the middle of any foward progress, but the tide cannot be turned for long. Pardon the mixed metaphors; they seem to fit this current situation.

2016 is still two years away. Rather than bemoan the setback, it seems to me we should be strategizing for that next presidential election.

Just me.
