We had no idea deer lived nearby us. Last evening we saw a deer walking by.
Dave got pictures but they are dark and hard to see. Anyone else surprised by animal neighbors?

Dear Alice,

Every night, the deer come to eat what is left in the bird feeders. This year there is a new baby deer. We have lights that come on outside if there is motion and mostly we see deer. Usually it is three or four that are eating out of the big bird feeder that is filled with whole corn and three grain scratch feed that we put out for the sandhill cranes and the birds. We have feeders for the squirrels, too. They are filled with sunflower seeds and whole corn and then there are the feeders for the small birds that are filled with a mix of wild bird seeds.

Last year we had an infestation of snails and they have never completely left. The egrets have found that feast and I am glad.

Whatever we grow, there is a wild and hungry animal that is looking for it. We have a field of corn growing now and some peanuts. I consider that at least a herd of deer and some pigs will have a better life this year. There is always enough for David and I and the rest of the family.

Love,

Betty

Where my sister-in-law lives upstate NY, she lives on three
acres of land , the deer come out in the morning and evening
and in the Winter she buys bails of hay so the deer won't starve.

Let's see, we have great big gopher turtles, armadillo's (families), spoonbills, egrets, hawks and snakes.

My back fence is broken, the break hidden by the grasses that came through from the field in the back of the fence. That's where the turtle comes through. He wanders around the grass in the back yard and then returns to his home in the ground somewhere.

The armadillo's root in my flower garden by the front porch and make a mess of it. I think the egrets are after the snails here too.

Are the snakes poisonous?
Do you have any gators?

Armadillos can be a pain. They would root up my mums every year I tried to plant them. When we lived here ('72 -'77), we also had jack rabbits, king snakes, a racoon, and an opossum:
