Isn't it great that we can start the new year off with a clean slate. Haven't made any mistakes or rubbed anyone the wrong way, yet.

I gave the inspirational talk at church Sunday - and it was about the gifts we give that are fleeting and the new year is a good time for gifts of the heart: the gift of truth; the gift of love; the gift of compassion; the gift of forgiveness; the gifts of acceptance and tolerance; the gifts of joy and laughter; the gift of time and the gift of optimism.

I'm sure each of you could add to the list of gifts that would make 2013 the best new year yet in each of your lives. I certainly wish that for you.

It has not started out well for me. I received word that my brother is very gravely ill and on a ventilator. I am praying he does not regain consciousness as he hates doctors, hospitals and thinks the unpardonable sin is dying. He was very upset when our father passed at 82. He is only 67.

Difficult to respond to your news, Alice. If you're praying that he does not regain consciousness, then wishing him well doesn't seem appropriate.
I trust that whatever the situation, he is without pain.

I must concentrate on Betty's gift - hope. Hope is the sustaining quality. We are all surrounded by difficulties, losses and problems beyond our control. At the same time, we have the gift of our faith and the beauty of the universe to sustain us.

The other day I saw a magnificent sunset on the Gulf and turned around and saw the full moon rise through the rose tinged clouds in the east - and I felt the awe and power of a world I do not understand but in which I plod through each day in spite of its trials and tribulations - grateful for those vignettes of joy.

I have a close friend facing a return of cancer; and she has always led a healthy life. My heart breaks for her and I am helpless to do anything but pray and continue the gift of friendship.

I don't know, truthfully, if prayer "works;" but I know it gives me comfort and does put positive energy into a universe where all things work together - even my little prayer.

My poor brother is a result of Viet Nam. He has not had much peace since then.
People who pass without knowing it are fortunate.
The worst thing that could befall him would be if he were to awaken and find himself in a hospital.

Sorry to hear that Alice. Perhaps he will finally find peace.
