| My kids told a story - and I believe it - about going with their dad to a favorite pizza place in Orange, leaving a Twinkie on a brick ledge at the back of their booth, coming back to the same booth three months later, and there it sat, as "fresh" as ever, the "freshness" due to the tons of preservatives in it. Ever look at the list of ingredients in a Twinkie?? |

| I looked at the ingredients and was shocked, Ann. The funny thing is that when I ate these junk foods, I felt marvelous and was able to work all day and all night, climb mountains and do everything. |

| I was 7 years old when I went to the IGA supermarket and stuffed a Hostess Snowball (a chocolate one with pink marshmello and coconut on the outside) inside my dress. I was walking along to the exit when a tall man with a strong hand put a squeeze on my shouler. "What have you inside your shirt." he glared at me. I, at once began to shake and bawl. He held out his hand, I reached in and handed him the Snowball. "Don't ever come in this store again or you will go to jail! Now, get out of here." I got out the door and ran. I never stole another thing. Love, Betty |

| Oh no! I hoped someone would buy them and fix the products and have a new nostalgia campaign for healthy twinkies and Wonder Bread. I can't imagine a road trip without gas stations with twinkies for sale. Just can't imagine. So sad, so sad. |

| Betty, I have a similar story. Only it was a drugstore with a friend. He did call my friend's mother who knew mine would whip me with a switch so she didn't tell for my promise to never steal again......no wonder I was "perfect" as a child and terrified to bend rules as an adult.
A friend of mine teased me about leaving labels on pillows - so one time to show I could do it I ripped the labels off a set of floor pillows - and then had stuffing coming out of holes I had to sew up. That was proof that breaking rules brings consequences. |

| Dear Diane,
How funny about the labels. It was not until I read an article about how people took those labels so seriously that the lived with that flap on a new bedspread for years that I (mustering all the braveness in my soul) cut the big flap off!) Here we are with all the brains that God has given us and yet .. . .
There are secrets we take to the grave, and the Snowball Twinkie one is now out there for anyone to use in case I ever become a candidate for political office....
I have one more story of stealing where I never was caught. It was the five and dime and I pilfered some rhinestone earings, little chandeliers they were.
When I think back upon it, I wonder why I was leave to roam the streets and peruse the stores willy nilly. When I was in a town, it was kind of like going to the city dump in the country. No one worried about me. I just got up and went where I wanted, came home and sucked my thumb.
Love, Betty |

| Betty,
Your parents were neglectful as well as abusive.
I wish they had let you roam about more. Their care was far worse than the neglect.
The man overstepped his bounds considerably. To tell you, you could not come in the store again was a bit much.
He should have been worried about why you were alone.
A seven year old stealing a Snowball is hardly a crime.
Run for president and wear your rhinestone earrings, I will vote for you:) |

| Dear Alice,
Times have changed.
In this country space that I live, 30 years ago, people, adults or child, could wander the pastures to the rivers, the creeks, and no one would worry about it. Now, no tresspassing signs are on every fence.
That is all because people are required to have insurance and because the insurance companies not wanting to pay and because so many people are ready to sue and collect. Walking the cow trail of old down to the creek and wading in the shallow water is not something some child can do any longer. Every one is afraid.
I blame all of this on insurance companies and banks who really do own us all.
That goes right back to Ronald Reagan and every Republican that has breathed and voted in the last 20 years. They have constipated the country.
Love,
Betty |

| Why didn't they see the trend towards healthy living and adapt?
They could have modified their products a bit. People will always want snacks! |

Opportunists then took to eBay and Craigslist. They began marketing their stashes to collectors and junk-food lovers for hundreds — and in some cases — thousands of dollars, according to reports. Retail price for a box of 10 Twinkies is about $5 |

| Maybe the whole thing is a hoax. The employees were on strike. Maybe there's a conspiracy somewhere. |

| 1118/2012 The union brought the company to it's knees, very bad ! The company couldn't do anymore concessions, they decided to close for good, 18,500 employees out of work as of this past Thursday.....35 factories will close across USA. Just read yesterday a big Medical supply co. will let go 1,100 employees, let's see that's almost 20,000 people out of work...And the govt. says everything looks fine, bull ! But the Gov. of NM is signining into law new taxes for un-employment for companys, if a company has a revolving door they'll pay double the tax on their payrolls, maybe Kohl's will see the light and not constantly let employees go, then re-hire new ones then in a few months they'll be let go, this is how they run their stores....... Cheers.Joe... |

| Two sides to the story, Joe: - Quote :
- This is the new American story, but someone finally stood up and said, “Stop!”
Pundits should be applauding the Bakery Workers of Hostess Brands for standing up to Wall Street interests and standing for decent working standards and the middle class.
The truth is that the Bain-style vulture capitalists invested in Hostess to profit not by making quality products, but by bleeding the company of every dollar before discarding it.
They’re doing it because they can, because that’s what Wall Street speculators do when they get their hands into a company’s till.
And today, the millionaires are walking away, with an added twist. They’re blaming the bakers and others who faithfully made the iconic Twinkies and other Hostess goods for decades—not for untold riches but for a decent paycheck and good benefits.
Not even a week before Thanksgiving, not even two weeks after the American electorate rejected this winner-take-all-view of the world, more than 18,500 working people face the prospect of looking for work in a still-dismal economy. the executives planned to give themselves bonuses and demanded pay cuts and benefit cuts from the workers, who haven’t had a raise in eight years.
In 2011, Hostess earned profits of more than $2.5 billion but ended the year with a loss of $341 million as it struggled to pay the interest on $1 billion in debt. This year, the company sought bankruptcy protection, the second time in eight years.
Still, the CEO who brought on the latest bankruptcy got a raise while Hostess demanded that its workers accept a 30 percent pay and benefits cut.
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/11/18/1162645/-Giving-Thanks-for-Hostess-Workers# Unions protect workers from bosses. Naturally, the bosses would like to portray the unions in the worst light. It's typical big business tactics to cover their own greed. |

| Than you, Ann, for the rest of the story. Another Romney 'investment'?
I believe that we are very lucky, indeed, not to have him and his ilk running this country any more than they already do.
They could not get Big Bird, but down goes Twinkie.
Love,
Betty |

| Me too, Alice. All the years before cable TV, before sattelite Tv and when the only thing that brought the wonderful PBS channels into our house so that my children and our family could look out beyond sit com tv was the antennae on top of the house that brought those channels into our home. They brought in so many wonderful shows, and still do.
To this day, if one cannot afford anything, the local channels and pbs are still there to be seen for free. There are so very many wonderful things for the viewing. Out here in this country place, even without sattelite, we could watch the public television channels. The local channels may not be clear, kind of like it used to be in the 50's or 60's, but we can see them. To think of all that to be gone is sad beyond the saying of it.
I think back to the Saturday morning cartoons. Simple and lovely 'toons like Bugs Bunny, The Roadrunner, Charlie Brown, Bulwinkle Moose, Gumbie, and Tweetie Bird and Foghorn Leghorn. After working all week and the children in school or day care all week, Saturday morning was looked forward to by everyone. Sitting all in the same chair and watching the cartoons together. All of that come over the local channels and PBS.
Simple times? Yes and no. Lots of love there in that chair? You bet.
Love,
Betty |
