| Betty, I like the way you think. When a person dies, the playing field isn't leveled. Those still alive can even walk on the graves of the dead. We have something more valuable than money and that is life. I wonder if the rich would consider leaving their wealth to common folk like us? We could promise to keep their memory alive at least for that one good action. . |

Love,
Betty Like the pharoahs - Doesn't appear to have worked all that well for them. They would need very large tombs. Or they could do what an individual in my home town did, and will it all to the city and a museum: http://www.starkmuseum.org/ - Quote :
- The Stark Museum of Art in Orange, Texas, began as a vision of H.J. Lutcher Stark. As early as 1927 H.J. Lutcher Stark had discussed with associates his hope of someday opening a museum. His interest in the arts followed that of his mother, Miriam Lutcher Stark, an enthusiastic collector of art, furniture, and decorative items from around the world. Lutcher Stark developed a similar passion for collecting, with a particular interest in nature and art depicting the American West.
Lutcher Stark began building his collection as an undergraduate at the University of Texas, when he started purchasing works from Texas artists. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, he began collecting American Indian objects from New Mexico. He married Nelda Childers in 1943, and together they continued to build the collection. From 1944 to 1962 they traveled annually to their ranch in Colorado, stopping along the way in Santa Fe and Taos, New Mexico, to meet with artists. From these visits they built a collection that strongly represents the Taos Society of Artists, a colony of artists drawn to the area for its scenery and culture. In the 1950s, they expanded the collection with the rare five-volume set of John James Audubon's Birds of America as well as letters and first edition copies of publications by Audubon and John Woodhouse Audubon. In that same decade, they collected porcelain birds and flowers by Dorothy Doughty and Edward M. Boehm as well as a series of Steuben Glass pieces, including the complete set of The United States in Crystal. In the late 1950s, the Starks added 230 works by Paul Kane, which was their last major purchase for the collection. Inspired by their shared passion, Nelda and Lutcher Stark founded the Nelda C. and H.J. Lutcher Stark Foundation in 1961 to enrich the quality of life in Southeast Texas through education and the arts. Although Lutcher Stark had envisioned a museum in his hometown of Orange, Texas, he did not live to see it accomplished. Upon his death in 1965, the majority of the art collection in Lutcher Stark’s Estate passed to the Foundation. Under Nelda C. Stark’s direction, the Foundation built the Stark Museum of Art, which opened on November 29, 1978. The Foundation continues today to acquire additional works of art for the collections. - Quote :
- It includes numerous items from Steuben Glass, including the only complete set of The United States in Crystal, a series of bowls engraved with scenes representing each of the 50 states as well as Puerto Rico and the Union. Additional items in the Steuben Glass Collection include 76 engraved plates as well as numerous bowls, flasks, and plaques.
The United States in Crystal, Texas Steuben Glass (Founded in 1903), manufacturer Sidney Waugh (1904-1963), designer 1959, engraved crystal 11 x 7 1/2 inches (27.9 x 19.1 cm) 41.8.1.CL (The Steubens Collection was my favorite room in the museum. My dad loved Steubens glass and gave several of the smaller, less expensive pieces to Mom and to me as gifts over the years. I also remember an enormous Bierstadt painting - it covered an entire wall. Albert Bierstadt was one of the Hudson River Artists from the mid-19th century. It is some museum, especially for a small city.) Only in his case, it got him murdered. His second wife poisoned his first wife, and then poisoned him, too. It took his descendants quite a few years to prove it, but it finally all came out: http://www.amazon.com/Devil-Had-Wife-Frank-Mills/dp/1439240345/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1352898764&sr=1-1&keywords=if+the+devil+had+a+wife - Quote :
- Once upon a time. Happily ever after. Such are the classic promises of fairy tales. Yet in Texas we find a twist to the familiar storyline. In If the Devil Had a Wife, there is still the battle of Good vs. Evil, a beautiful maiden, a wealthy suitor, a kingdom of riches and the wicked witch, but any similarity with Cinderella and Snow White ends there. With the help of her life partner and an attorney (always necessary in these modern times), Nelda Stark executes a devious plan that elevates fraud and theft to a new high. A massive coverup reaches into the Texas Attorney General's Office, stealing from not only the Stark family, but the federal and state governments.
As I've posted before, I knew these people. It's all true. The rumors were whispered all along, but nobody dared to say it out very loud. Reality is sometimes more chilling than fiction. |

| Millionaires are not all that wealthy anymore. They are much more common than we think. You'd need billions to even think of such extravagant purchases. In fact, many wealthy people think they are poor. So poor they need and must have tax cuts.
One work of extreme caution on investing in jewelry. It has a high mark up on it and only buy it if you really like it. It has sentimental value only and you won't get near what you paid for it.
Really there is no safe investment. |

| 11/14/2012 Alice... You have it wrong , there are now 47.5 million people on food stamps more than at any other time. Now I heard on the car radio that Pres. Obama wants to raise taxes to double on the wealthy, that would be 70% and double the Corp. tax that would be 30% , does he think this is France ? He's making a very stupid move, there will be a battle in Congress un-like anyone has ever seen..... Cheers..Joe.. |

| As for placing money is rare gems, there is more folly in that than you may think. I spent almost ten years in the jewelry industry, attended conferences conducted by the diamond people, etc. Prices are controlled by the consortium of these people, i.e., they take diamonds off the market to indicate a shortage and the prices soar for a period of time and then they cash in by unloading the glut. For a period of time I wore a $10,000 wristwatch and a solid gold ring with a 1.2 Caret Diamond. I had an appriaised $20,000 on my left arm. It was all show. Now I don't wear any rings and use a Timex watch. Those show-off days are past.
To reiterate my thoughts on precious gems, they are as fickle as the people who promote them. Try selling them and you find just how much you have overpaid. You would do better to have a pair of Marilyn Monroe's panties.
Real Estate is a much safer bet. There is only so much land available and the value increases with how scare land becomes. That can't be fudged. Of course the value is also conditioned on the availabity of money to buy/sell. Nothing is 100% secure or safe, however one must bet wisely. Keeping money in a matress may appear secure, but there is no return plus the value of the money decreases. Rats may devour it and/or someone may throw the old matress out not knowing what's inside. |

| Abe,
You are so right.
I worked in a jewelry store and it was connected to a pawn shop.
The people bought at one price and sold much lower.

| Joe, I just finished listening to Obama's press conference. He did not say that. He did say that he wasn't backing down on his stand that the wealthiest Americans needed to contribute more than they are now, and that the tax cuts for the middle class needed to be approved right away as a start - all very reasonable, and part of the mandate given him on election day. |

| If, finally, no one believes the knee jerk news, this country can get on with being a country for all the people of the land. Not likely to happen as long as people are star stricken by an image on the screen of their tv and consider every word to be truth.
Love,
Betty |
