Two good friends reminded me today about the quality of grace. I consider grace the beauty of spirit. The kindness or hearts. My family and friends have amazing grace.

I have a spot on my right lung. It will be removed on June 21 at 8:30 in the morning. I was not going to post it here, but I had a second thought. You are all part of my family.

All good vibrations are appreciated.

God bless you all.

Love,

Betty

Yes, the best of thoughts to you from me also. At this age we never know the surprises of tomorrow; we just have to live today well. I have a few of my own that could use a prayer or two. Be well - you have many stories to write and lots to teach me yet.

There is something to the power of thought - some call it prayer and some call it meditation - but whatever it is connects the human spirit and provides strength. The problem is that our wishes for the results of that power are not always granted in the way we choose.

Thank you all for your prayers and kind thoughts.

I have been so healthy in my life. I am unfamiliar with hospitals, pain and the thought that I am really mortal, after all. I have been reading on the internet how a wedge resection of a lung is done. I will have an epidural catheter during surgery and the 2-3 days in ICU. I hope that works! Shocked The surgeon will cut between my ribs and do his deed from there. I should be able to go home in about 10 days and be almost normal in 4-6 weeks.

I have always been so self sufficient. I will do my very best to keep positive and work toward normalcy. Thank you for the prayers. Say a lot for my David and my children. I will be unconcious but they will be awake and worried.

I will have my iphone and be able to read this message board and email after a few days. As long as my right hand thumb and index finger still works, I will be able to let you all know how I am doing.

Tomorrow is a new day. I picked the acorn squash and the butternut squash today and will roast them tomorrow and freeze the flesh. (They are easy to prepare and taste a lot like baked sweet potato. I will cook them, put the flesh in muffin tins and freeze them, then put two of the frozen result into seal a meal bags and freeze. Of course, when I want to serve them, I will take them out of the bag before thawing. I knew you all would love to know that.) Smile

Thank Miss Dusty for her prayers, Joe. Jazzmin and Sara are going to miss me something terrible as will all the animals of Wooffer's Woods. They are so used to me filling the feeders everyday.

Love, Betty

Dear Alice,

The surgeon said they would pry my ribs apart and may have to take a little piece out of one. I have had 4 broken ribs in my life. I imagine it will hurt.

He was glad that I was not fat. I was, too.

From what I understand, the incision will be on my side, kind of in the back and the tubes will be placed somewhere around it. It may be several tubes and several incisions. The tubes will help re-inflate my lung and suck out all the blood and fluid. A machine will be attached to do the sucking. Once there is no more ooze and my lung is inflated, I can be unhooked and come out of ICU and take oral pain meds. 5-7 days after that, I can go home and have therapist help me to breathe. I do hope that they can come to Duette and I do not have to have my family drag me hither and thither. I am scared. Scared that I will never be able to pick my own squash again, or plant it. Scared that the things that I take for granted doing now, will never be the same.

That you and everyone here takes the time to comfort me is so nice. I will be brave. I hope. Sometimes I do not feel so.

Love,

Betty

Betty,

Only a complete lunatic would not be scared. I was petrified out of my head before brain surgery. It succeeded far beyond my wildest hopes --then had to be redone.
Even though it was only half of it that had to be redone, I was totally freaked out and whined to my Internal med doctor that I didn't like brain surgery.

"How surprising, Everyone else just loves it!" was her rapid -fire response. It still makes me laugh to think of her.

God will get you through. He is hearing a lot about you these days.
You may not work as hard as you have. I don't, but that is okay. My family still likes me and that is the main thing.

Dear Alice,

I cannot imagine brain surgery. You are the brave one. When I think of what you have endured, over and over again, I am amazed by your strength. I am afraid, but I believe that I will be well again, given time. I do not think I will ever be the same, stamina wise, but I will be here. Life has to begin anew, sometimes. It has been that way for me. The past is past. The future is open. I do not imagine that I will be climbing onto my roof ever again, or planting 10,000 strawberry plants, but I will find my way and what I can do, I will do.

God bless you, Alice, and Ann and Abe and Joe and DK and Don and Miss Dusty and everyone else who sends the good vibrations to my family.

Love,

Betty

There's been quite a few struggles on this board, won and lost. Through it all, generous and caring people share their strength and words of hope. Everything has a reason and a season. PA brought this experience into our lives. So, it was meant to be. Through the years we have found successes and challenges; but we have lived life and shared its meaning. Be well.

Betty,

I am not brave. To this day I recoil at Black and Decker drills. It seemed that's what they drilled holes in my head with.

First they bolted a steel halo frame on my head. Then they looked at it and said, "Oh Phooey, it is crooked." Nothing to do but unbolt it and adjust it and rebolt it. Not fun! I had always wanted to be awake for surgery. This cured me.
My pancreatic surgery was not fun they didn't like my incision so ripped it open. The blood was oozing and they brought me lunch--tomato soup!

"No thank you, I said, "I have lost my appetite and I am going home. I am petrified of a hospital infection."

Watch the nurses, make sure they wash their hands and keep your bare feet off of the floors.

Dear DK,

You are one of the bravest people on this board. You are so smart and aware and able to put your thoughts into words. I am so proud to know you. Unique, you are.

You envelope me with your kindness and make me feel that all will be well.

Love,

Betty

Dear Betty,

I am staying with my parents for a few days (yesterday was my father's eighty-seventh birthday). As soon as I saw your message, I thought of how Dick would have been the first to comfort you and tell you that everything had to go well because we couldn't manage without you. How true this is! We are your extended family, and we wish you all the very best. This operation is a real nuisance, but you deserve a rest. Take it; give your body the time it needs to recover and all will be well. You'll be in my thoughts on Thursday and throughout the following weeks.

Love,
Shelagh

Betty, I saw Alice's message on FB and wanted to log in to wish you the best. And for once, I agree with everything Shelagh said Very Happy - so face your surgery with the knowledge that your family and friends, even the distant ones, will be praying for you.

Remember how strong you truly are and know you can do this!
