Dear Joe,
I am not sure what you are asking.
Opening a can of evaporated milk needs a church-key kind of beer opener with the puncture point. It used to open beer cans that did not have tabs that could be pushed inside or pulled out to open.
Funny how the old stuff from the 1940's is not understood in this day.

I have such an implement. I use it to open the Ball jars that I have canned. It works. It is the only thing that will work without a lot of hoopla.

Look for a beer can opener and find one with a point.

Love,
Betty

I've never called it a church key. I've always just called it a bottle opener. The pointy end will open canned milk.

Alice, the term Church Key is new to me.
Must one pry the church door open with a special key to get in?
The opener that JoElle displayed has been around for a long time and I still use it. It is functional for a variety of things. Puncturing holes in cans is a good feature while the other side allows one to open bottle caps.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Can_opener#Churchkey

Quote :
There is sparse, and often contradictory, documentation as to the origin of the term "churchkey". The phrase is likely a sarcastic euphemism, as the opener was obviously not designed to access churches. One explanation is in Medieval Europe, most brewers were monks. Lagering cellars in the monasteries were locked, to protect aging beers and the monks carried keys to these lagering cellars. It may have been those keys, which remotely resembled the early churchkey openers, that gave the "churchkey" opener its name.[16] Another motive for assigning the device such an ironic name could have been the fact beer was first canned (for test marketing) in 1933[17]—the same year Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed the Cullen-Harrison Bill.[18] This act, which predated Repeal of Prohibition, amended the Volstead Act, making 3.2 beer legal. Some experts have posited the term "churchkey" was a way to "stick it to" the religious organizations who had effected Prohibition in the first place.[19]

I always thought that it was an ironic expression, referring to the idea that it gave one access to "spirits," which could cause one to experience a "high," that might feel similar to an ecstatic spiritual experience.

Joe, most malls have kitchen specialty stores, like Sur L'Table or Williams-Sonoma, which sell unusual gadgets like the one you show in your OP - you might check there.

When I was a kid, that particular gadget didn't exist. We used an ice pick to punch holes in cans of condensed milk. Pet milk was a popular brand. Once Pet Milk had a campaign for a Pet Milk slogan offering the winner a prize of $1,000. Most everyone participated. The winning prize went to the man who wrote,
Why I like Pet Milk:
"No tits to pull,
No hay to pitch,
Just punch two holes
in the son of a bitch"

His slogan was never used in our puritan region, but it was quoted often by those who read it.

Well, guys, I'm 70, and I've been using a church key since I was a teenager in the 50's, and calling it by that name. Never really questioned where the word came from, just knew that was what everyone called it.

And why might it be that I'm conjecturing that you and your friends weren't opening condensed milk cans?

Joe, I did you a google search. I found a few images, but most said it was no longer available.

This was the best I could come up with:

You might check the ebay site and see if they still have it.

Well, we could have opened condensensed milk, had we known what that was. However, t'was not milk, nor cream, nor churches we were opening, but mulitple cans and long necked bottles of the wonderful brown elixr that we found so alluring when we were 16 and 17. Please note that the church key in the picture had a sharp end for cans, and a blunt end for bottles, and we grew very adept at using both ends. Also, there was a phase when we sharpend the pointy end so that it could be used as a weapon if we so chose. Which of course we so did, at times.

I was looking at Joe's gadget and I see what he is talking about. I imagine it is right up there with the nutmeg grater gadget. Like Abe said, an ice pick (that will be hard to find now) was all we had. I loved the poem, Abe. Arrow

Love,
Betty

I am not a gadget person. My mother-in -law is. She used to try to sell me gadgets--finally gave up.
The worst was a board to fasten a baby to in a bath tub. No way!
She gave it up. I am a hard sell.

Dear Alice,
I remember that gadget. You were well to discard it.
There are a couple of gadets that really are nice.

I have one that is just a little knife with a screw on the end. It makes radish roses or carrot twirls. I will try to find a picture of it and post it.
The potato ricer is a nice old fashiioned gadget and the french fry cutter is priceless.
Love,
Betty
