I just read a book for review. I thoroughly enjoyed the story; yet, totally out of sync with the prose was the insert of sexually explicit descriptions of intimacy that I found out of context and detracting from the otherwise good story. Perhaps the scenes were put in for a need to please another audience besides me or based on the types of novels the publisher publishes. I am at a loss. I can't provide the 4 star review I would like to because I need to add my feelings about the sexual content. This type review experience is turning me from reviewing books at all. Now, I need to attempt explaining to the author why I will not give them a review. It's not a comfortable position.

A colleague reviewed my first novel, and found it overall to their liking but had some issues. I felt badly, but they still gave me an excellent review. I wondered if the review was because they felt kindly about me or the novel...
