I'm putting together another book similar to yours, Alice --- only very different in content. As soon as it's finished, I will decorate my tree.

I will get a better picture of the mantle.
I am a lousy photographer.
Sorry.

It isn't very big-- 7 feet maybe
It looks taller. It has been a long time since we've had space for a big tree. Looking back through my files, I wonder why we never managed, in those days, to get pictures of how everything looked before the Christmas Morning Chaos. This was one of the least chaotic, caught just before the worst of it began, I guess.
Bill and his dad seem to be taking pictures of the mantel. Now, if I could only find one.
(That's my back, in the green robe; Lynn, Dave, and Susan. I think this was 1974.)

My favorite trees were the last minute scrawny ones in hotel rooms and foreign countries. Unfortunately, my son doesn't celebrate Christmas because he feels damaged from all the moving around with so few Christmas experiences in the same place. For me, the many different Christmas places were exciting. A child sees things through their own feelings. I used to be sick from the pine trees, but I never had a fake until the little one I used recently that pops out of the box fully lit and decorated.
My sister in law's family always lived in the same house. It has a cathedral ceiling, and they always bought the tallest tree that reached nearly to the peak. One year they had to cut it in pieces to get it out; it came in bundled. Once open, it was too big to get out of the house!
I had a living tree in a pot in N. California that I hauled in and out for the couple years we lived there. The movers even tied it to the back of the moving truck when we moved from S. California to N. California.
Anyway - the best of holidays to all. It's what's in the heart that makes the season; the rest is all dressing.

Tell your son to have Christmas now and do it as he wishes.
My mother did not decorate--doesn't stop me. She was herself, I am different.
I used to paint the windows for Christmas, after all, it only comes once a year.
Childhood is only childhood. No one loves theirs--because they were not in charge.
