? on book placement in Amazon categories

When you upload a book to Amazon, do you pick out the three categories you want it to be in? And how often can you change it? Just wondering. I'm referring to the categories that show up when you see "Best Seller In These Categories" under its overall ranking.

My first textbook was in three categories, two of which made sense (the third seemed random). But now it's listed in three completely different categories. They're all kind of random, and it doesn't stay long in any of them, whereas in the last set it stayed a long time in a couple of them.

Seems like this would hurt sales. Does the publisher choose these categories, and why would it change them?

Amazon's category choices are difficult to understand. Yes, you do have a choice of two categories (with sub-categories) but the book doesn't always appear under those cateogories. There isn't an army of elves hard at work changing book categories; it's all done electronically and we all know how reliable computer software is at this kind of thing!

I think that your publisher has something to do with it.



Wooffer is under Horror. No matter how often I requested it be changed to children's books, it never did get done.

I've never dealt with Amazon except as a customer. I'm surprised that categories aren't a simple issue of telling them where to put it and them doing it.

That would be too easy.
