| Over 30 years ago, we were discussing the same issues. Jimmy Carter had this to say, after listening to the people in the US (voices from one side of the pond)
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/features/primary-resources/carter-crisis/
And the response was to elect Ronald Reagan, and look what that got everybody into.

| That was a great speech with lots of wisdom. A vision for the future. And yes, Ann, we got a person who reversed the course. And subsequently another President that catered to big business at the expense of the average American citizen.
I remember Jimmy Carter. He was and is an honorable man. He still fights for peace and cares for our country. When he's no longer with us, people will get to know him and what he stands for. |

| I loved Reagan. In fact, I recently bought a gold-plated commemorative coin of him as a lucky charm. |

| The worst mistake this country ever made was electing Ronald Reagan President. The many mistakes he made set us on a course of destruction, and we are now seeing first hand just how badly he screwed us. |

| Turning the mentally ill out into the streets was a bummer and deregulating everything was another big goof.

| This country is controlled by the media. The media is controlled by rich people. It seems that most of the population is in a media indused trance. "Tell me what to think, tell me what to buy, tell me who is in, tell me so I do not have to think it up for myself. I am too busy, I just want to fit in, who cares about politics, it has nothing to do with me, I am just one person, what can I do. Do I look pretty, smell ok? .......... " Love, Betty |

| I sat here in my house and listened to Jimmy Carter say that Fox News was a big part of this world's problems. You know, I agree with that. Fox News did not carry President Obama's adress to the nation after his election. Why would that be? I am still mad about that. Do not these news people, CBS, NBC, Fox, CNN, and on ad nauseum, have a responsiblity to report events without a political slant? Newspapers are not excluded in this. The St. Petersburg Times, the Tampa Tribune (and all their small, local editions) put the Republican slant on every thing. Love, Betty |

| Dear E. Don, Please give my personal regards to President Jimmy Carter the next time you and he talk. He does not know me from Eve, but you may tell him I am a genuine admirer. Love, Betty |

| I think the media was a big part of the general public's reaction to President Carter. We saw him as a peanut farmer whose brother made Billy Beer.
I thin that today, he is coming closer to getting the respect he always deserved.
Just me.

| Thanks Betty, but I've only met him twice. I did get to personally give him a copy of the South Town Rinky Dinks though. It's my 5 year old great grandson Aiden that is on a first name basis with President Carter, and not me. President Carter lives in Plains, Ga, which is just down the road, and he and Rosalynn still remain friends with the people they knew here before he became President. My grand daughter's MIL is one of those people, and they talk to the Carters quite a bit. The President still teaches a sunday school class, and seems like one of the most down to earth men you'd ever want to meet. |

| I corresponded with Jimmy Carter and later President Carter. His handwritten notes I treasure. He was smart, but did not possess the eloquence as a Churchhill, a Kennedy or a Reagan. If one listened to the words he spoke, the message was clear. |

| Remember the Iran hostage situation? As soon as Reagan took office they were released. The world respected Reagan and laughed at Carter. He was not a statesman. He is in his element now, teaching Sunday school and rehabbing houses for Habitat. |

| I have other letters like the sample I post here. President Carter worked hard for Peace in the Middle East. UN Resolutions were made, but never enforced. Carter is still working for Peace. I read the book he was writing at the time of his letter. He also wrote, "Peace, not Apartheid" that was highly criticized. It is a great book and I highly recommend it. |

| Appearances can be deceiving. Jimmy Carter was a real person and what you saw of him was actually the man he was.
Ronald Reagan, on the other hand, was an actor, a man who lived his life fooling people with the roles he played. It’s a fact that many people around the world saw the image Reagan wanted them to see and believed it. It isn’t hard to fool people who don’t know very much anyway, and many people looked at the surface that Reagan presented to them and thought there was some depth there, when in reality he was quite shallow. Reagan got things done by telling everyone what they wanted to hear, promising he would do everything for everyone, and in fact doing only those things that helped out the ones who put him in office. He was playing the role they had scripted for him, and this role appealed to the weak minded and gullible, those he could fool into thinking they were going to get something from his Presidency. Those of us who can think know that didn’t happen, but some, such as the one here, continue to believe. How sad. |

| Well, perception is reality. The operative phrase is, "he got things done." |

| From comments I hear outside the USA, Reagan was liked, but not respected. He played a role as Don stated. He played a role when appealing to the Moral Majority (if such a thing exists) by using the word God in his speeches. It worked. |
