| Well, the economy is in the tank, the weather is dreary, people are unemployed, earthquakes and floods everywhere, countries in revolt...
Does anyone like this? I have seen better times.
I went to the dentist and he said his kids can hardly sleep at night--they are scared of an earthquake. It is hard to be real happy with so much misery abounding.
How about you?

Alice..
There's nothing we can do against Mother Nature Nor are revolutions are business, especially this country. We are but a small shinning light of life in the sea of life.
Cheers..Joe |

| Joe,
You are a light. Brighten the corner where you are. I guess. |

| Dear Alice, You and I have lived a long time. I think of all the troubles that have been written about on this message board. I think of it all. I think of all the people we have known as friend who have passed on. Rainbow, Dick, Lane, Carol, Sophie, Maisy, ... We just go one day to the next. We love as best we can. Life is so hard sometimes. Each life has a spirit that remains on this earthly place after their body is no more. I believe that. It is a connection that we on this earth need for a while. I hope that our friends can let loose of this earth and go on to places that we cannot imagine and that they have not even dreamed possible. Sorrow is for this earth. It is not for after. Love, Betty |

| When Joe said there is nothing we can do "Against Mother Earth," it reminded me of a discussion I am participating in on another board, where several of us (including me) have used the expression, "being at the mercy of Mother Nature." It hit me, and I pointed out, that this was an expression of conflict, and I think that is the problem. We see Mother Earth, Mother Nature, as an enemy, rather than simple as a natural part of our existence.
Maybe we need to stop fighting her and recognize our connection.
Just me.

| In the programme I mentioned on another thread, Professor Brian Cox explained about the arrow of time and how, eventually, there would be no change in the Universe and time would cease to exist. All the planets will burn out and nothing will remain: ashes to ashes, dust to dust. This is predicted to be in a trillion, trillion ... trillion years' time. We will be a long time dead. |

That was such a cheery thought! I laughed. |

| Ann, It is hard to quit fighting that which is trying to kill us. |

| But Alice, She isn't trying to kill us. She's only trying to stay balanced, so She shifts things around when they need shifting, sends large masses of warm air into cold places, etc. We humans just happen to get in Her way. We choose to live along the known pathways of of Her means to survive.
One of the comments during the discussion on the board where this discussion came up is that we over-personify Nature, which, of course, I just did. His comment was that Nature is not like us, Nature just IS.

| Oh, nature is nothing like us. We are predatory, controlling, egotistical, selfish, inconsistent, aggressive, demanding, unreliable, arrogant. Nature made us that way. |

| Last night I said to my wife, "I guess we're living in the wrong era. She replied, "what era would you want to live in? Past eras weren't any better."
I suppose it is how we deal with the era in which we live. We need to crush the crushers. We need to support the striving (like we authors), and other people working hard to survive. We need to stop destroying our planet. We need to start living in a manner that extends life, not destroy it.
Perhaps nuking the nukers is the right direction.
We spent hundreds of millions on underground nuclear testing for a better weapon of destruction. Why not spend some money and energy for constructive purposes. Clean power that does not threaten man or the planet. |

| The detail and speed of communications allows us to know more about the negative things than ever before. Negativity is more exciting and elicits more responses than positive things. We have the whole universe to understand, in a moment's notice.
The world has been full of trauma, natural disaster and manmade disasters since the beginning of time. It's just a matter of perspective.
It pays to have a joy jar. It's a jar in which you put little pieces of paper on which you write a few words about each joyous event experienced, whether personally or just by knowledge. It's more fun to put them on colored bits of paper. Then, on a particular gloomy news day, you pull out a piece of joy. On a really awful day, smash the jar and pick out the pieces of paper from the shards of glass: that takes your mind off your other troubles.
