| In light of the shootings in Arizona yesterday, when shopping, would you feel safer with a gun or without one? |

| Shelagh -lol.
I'm a gun owner, as are my parents and in-laws. There is nothing wrong with responsible gun ownership and everything wrong when the state tells you you can't have one. Like the saying goes -when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.
But I'm not sure if you're asking about that or CCL. People who are allowed to conceal and carry go through background checks. From what's come out of the shooter, he had a history of mental problems and run-ins with the law. He would not have been approved for CCL. And machine guns, which he used, are illegal, anyhow! Where did he get that?
And that said, I don't know that having people with concealed guns on them would help or hurt in such a situation. In some they might help, but in others, with a bunch of people firing their weapons, that could be another nightmare.
Nothing is guaranteed! |

| There is no denying we live in a violent world. There are always predators who kill or maim for no reason. Guns, knives, bombs, swords, baseball bats and pointed sticks will always be choice of the fearful. Us limies use broken beer glasses and fists or sometimes run our enemies down with a motor vehicle. It is illegal to be out on the street with a knife or even a baseball bat (interpreted by the law as an offensive weapon) or anything sharp.
The bobby on the beat is a rare sight and even they just carry a baton which is used quite aggressively on the unwary criminal. It is a cruel world. Nothing really changes. |

Those that still believe in God... and I know we're now only a small minority in this day and age... God is a better gun than any Smith and Wesson! Joe and Ahad, I couldn't agree more. Abe, David, Shelagh--Thanks for the humor. LC, Fair perspective. I wish someone like Walker Texas Ranger would have been there--he'd have take care of the nutter with a couple of kicks. David, I like the English way. The US has too many shootings by the cops. |

| We've alreay seen how people die without guns in our society. I don't think we need to get drawn into the never-ending gun-law debate. I'd rather engage in a saving lives debate. |

| I agree with Abe. A discussion of guns seems to bear no fruit.
I am against gun possession. Gun ownership in an organized club or organization where the guns remain and are checked out for hunting, sharp shooting, etc. seems a compromise approach.
We do not live in the wild west era when every day we were isolated on the plains in fear of bands of thieves and cutthroats. We live in a civilized society where guns in the possession of ordinary, untrained people is not necessary. We have a trained police force and National Guard for our protection.
Civilized society has rules that may take away one person's rights to benefit the many. In a democracy, the people choose which rights to possess and which ones to limit for the sake of a peaceful society. Times change and so do the needs of people.
As for a belief in God. That is a very personal topic. It has been my experience that when people say others do not believe in God, it means God as they form their definition. Just because people do not openly worship the Christian concept of God does not mean they do not believe. I don't have a definition; I just know that I reach out to that Creative power greater than all I know or can imagine to help me through times of trial and trauma. That God expects me to use the brain given to me and not to send away rowboats when I'm on a rooftop in a flood because I expect God to pluck me up and set me on land.
If some gallup poll says fewer people in the world believe in God than in previous times, I'd like to see their survey question. |

| DK and Abe,
I did not mean to offend you with this thread. I also do not want anyone offended here.
I have never known Ahad to force his view of God on anyone, anywhere.
Abe, You may feel free to discuss how to save lives. After all the question was safety?

I guess you've never heard of home intrusions? Do you think this family could have benefited from a gun in a drawer somewhere? http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/07/nyregion/07slay.html |

| Here's the real center of the problem as I see it... We need to figure out a way to keep the nutcases from owning guns. If we can get a handle on that, we'll be set. It's not the honest, law-abiding folks we have to worry about. |

| Unfortunately, killers always find a way: Ownership of guns, pistols and firearms came under media scrutiny. The parents of those children who had suffered wanted public support to ban the sale of hand guns for private use. The public response, strongly in favour of the ban, put tremendous pressure on the government to change the law on the legality of owning certain types of firearms. Every week, some reference to the Barloch campaign to ban hand guns appeared in local and national newspapers.
With their livelihood threatened, numerous gun clubs around the country responded immediately, but the tide of public opinion against them was overwhelming and it was simply a matter of time before an inevitable change in the law. The people had expressed their outrage so vociferously the government had no choice but to respond. Nobody denied the argument that killers kill, and if you removed one kind of weapon, they would replace it with another, but the message was unequivocal: people who harm children will not be tolerated by a civilised society.
Children are the future, and we must not lose sight of our main purpose in life: to ensure the survival of the species, we have to protect the young until they can produce their own off-spring. Forgiving child murderers is not an option. A society that allows this kind of abhorrent behaviour devours itself.
The media responded to the public outcry and, every week, the message was the same: hand guns must go.

| Unfortunately, nut cases don't always announce themselves. They are often very normal people who break under a collection of unusual and stressful circumstances. There's no need for guns to be handy for those occasions.
And, in noting Shelagh's post, the loss of life to children who have access to guns because they are so prevalent is horrid. I don't know how adults in good conscience can vote in favor of laws that make guns so accessible with full knowledge of the hell they cause in families and the wasted, lost lives. |
