I shook hands with him once. We came here to SA, my now-ex and friends, for the 1968 Hemisfair. He did an open air Q&A session with several of the Hemisfair guests. He was as charming in person as his reputation suggested.
I noticed in the linked eulogy that his dropped ball at the finals against the Greenbay Packers is considered one of his "mistakes." I don't think that's fair. It was just too bleeping cold for the Dallas boys that day in Wisconsin. Carol, if you're reading, I think we discussed that game at least once.
My favorite thing about him was the way he would leave the huddle singing "I didn't know God made Honky-tonk angels" at the top of his lungs, and immediately throw a perfect long-range forward pass right into his receiver's hands.
We won't see his likes again soon.
