PostSubject: Just got some good news   Just got some good news EmptyFri Jul 16, 2010 7:53 am

The JCF (Joseph Campbell Foundation) has just invited me to write an entry for their "MythNow Blog."

I asked for suggestions from them as to what to write about. Haven't heard back yet.

Anyone here have an idea? It would need to be about comparative mythology and its importance for today. Something Campbell would have approved of. I don't think I'm limited to writing about Murphy, but maybe a new look at the role of warrioring in a world of peace? How the ability to be assertive and take risks to help others is the basis of being a warrior?

Or just about finding a new mythology that encompasses all of us as being part of one universe?

Ann,

Wonderful! I am so happy with and for you. "Too many cooks spoil the stew."

I have no ideas for you, but look forward to yours.

I asked my adult son who he would consider a hero. He had no answer. I'm a little short on the subject myself. It seems that mythology was a place full of hero worship that gave the ordinary person a higher standard, even if unreachable.

My definition of a hero is someone who risks his life to save others.

At this point, I'm thinking more along the lines of a look at a hieros gamos - a sacred marriage of god and goddess that balances masculine and feminine - warrior and peacemaker, sun/moon, Father god/ Great Mother, Jesus and Magdalene (Dan Brown had something going there) - a way to reconcile the opposites that seem intent on destroying each other and the planet.

For now, anyway.

Neither can I, Alice. First I have to get over the intimidation. These guys are GOOD. It's a public part of the site, in case anyone is interested in seeing what I am up against:

Dear Ann,
I wrote a long thing, but it did not make sense in the end. I know you will write from your understanding of the human condition and an awareness of the unsung hero that lives within each of us.

Love,
Betty

Hi Ann
Congrats on the appointment. I would love to help you. Unfortunately I'm an opposite. I look at myths and measure them up against logic. ~~~This usually destroys the myth.
So whenever I like a myth I don't challenge it, I accept it at it's face value.
In a way I sometimes create my own myths by putting a logic stamp on a myth and create a different myth. e.g King of Princes and Henry vii.
I'm working on my next novel and am calling it Queen of Princes. It is about Queen Boudicca (Boadicea). I've been reading Tacitas, a Roman scribe, all about her. She was some lady. The Romans suffered their biggest military defeats against her (i.e. their worst defeats suffered over a period of about 500 years). She scared the living daylights out of the Roman soldiers, riding fearless into battle on her chariot.
I should have my book King of Princes in the hands of the Welsh Book Council by Wednesday next week, so hold thumbs that I get a good appraisal.
I look forward to reading your work when completed.
Best regards
luigie

Cool ideas, goblin, especially "the Cerberus where its heads are the euro the
dollar and global warming."

Where did you find that photo of me? The resemblance is as striking as the situation is familiar.

Congratulations Ann, how about the Arawak myth of ‘juracan’ the evil god of storms. We adopted the word (hurricane).

Thanks everyone for the ideas and support. I will let you know how it works out. The idea that the new myth needs to be about a marriage is still coming out as the theme - adding a sacred feminine perspective equal to the masculine.

I need a good name for the counterpoint to the warrior. I like what Carol Pearson did with the concept, but not her titles. In her first book, The Heroes Within, she used the martyr. In her next, Awakening the Heroes Within, she had switched to the care-giver, saying she realized that martyr had too negative a connotation. I'm kind of thinking peacemaker, but still not sure. The linguist who likes getting into politics, George Lakoff, uses metaphors for conservatives and progressives, the strict father and the nurturing parent, since the progressive would say that either parent can nurture, not just the mother. I'm after something of that sense. This weekend, I will ask my muse to help. (Thank you, Malcolm, for pointing out that book).

I'm not familiar with this one, Mike. Would Juracan be considered male, female, or whatever?

It sounds very relevant to our current situation.

It seems a goddess. My son was telling me about juracan. Wikipedia describes some confusion over the name and it may have been guabancex not juracan, juracan may have meant hurricane not the god (see Wikipedia, which incidently identifies the use of the term in King Lear Act 3 scene 2).

I agree it is very relevant to our current situation. A god of chaos who controlled the weather. We are trying to control the climate ourselves now.

I guess Campbell would have approved given the native American source.
