Sounds like a good way to get killed instead of just raped. And the guy already has to have it in you for it to work.

Doesn't sound like a real good idea, actually.

In "Snow Crash" there was something like that, but it injected knockout drugs. A little better idea.

This just seems nuts.

It's early days; it will be interesting to see if women feel safer or not. A few controlling boyfriends might get their comeuppance during the experiment. Pun intended!

You think this is something somebody would pull on a BOYFRIEND???? Jesus!

They didn't seem to think, while they were developing this thing, that rapists will know about it immediately (if if ever works) and avoid it. Remove it, use a stick first, something.

This is a really hair-brained idea. Even a can of mace would be more effective.

Men and women are raped. Rape is not always vaginal. The prevention of rape is complex. Unfortunately, like any violent act, the best prevention is to observe safety precautions at all times. If you travel and work, it is very difficult.

1. Keep gas tank as near full as possible.
2. Be sure you have a clicker that opens & lights the vehicle.
3. My cell phone is attached to my wrist. 911 is on speed dial.
4. I don't carry a purse; my license & credit card are in a pouch around my neck (and passport international).
5. Park in the front of the hotel; only stay at hotels with room entry from the inside, not the outside, preferably through a small lobby. (I stay at Holiday Inn Express, nice family hotels)
6. Have the inside of car empty except for small traveling bag so you don't have to lean into the trunk.
7. Talk to no one when you stop except necessary conversation.
8. Walk with determination and wear substantial shoes.
9. Look inside the lighted car before entering it. Lock immediately.
10. Yell "Fire" or "Bomb" at the top of your voice over and over if under attack. Screaming often excites the assailant.
11. Eyes, groin and Adams apple are the targets to keep from being forced into a vehicle or followed into a hotel room.
12. Bring food and drinks to the room so you don't have to dine alone at a late hour in the hotel restaurant.
13. Avoid hotel bars.
14. Do not drink alcohol while traveling or on business.
15. If traveling to a group conference, try to have rooms in the vicinity of known associates.
16. Have a room on the lower floors so there is less stops on the elevator.
17. Never have your arms full. Drag a cart that can be dropped to run. Drop everything and run.
18. Avoid offers of help except from hotel valets.
19. If the valet is prepping the room, remain outside the room until they are finished.
20. Avoid parking garages or if necessary, park in the brightest light and high traffic areas.
21. Keep heavy flashlights in each door pouch. They make good weapons. Long, manicured fingernails might be useful.
22. Keep the tire iron under the drivers' seat, not in the spare or keep one of those window wackers under the driver's seat and the passenger seat.
23. Keep an umbrella in the car (good surprise weapon - popping it open).
24. Dress conservative on business trips and traveling so it's easier to run. Save flirtation for known, local haunts.
25. Check in ahead of time so you don't need to converse at the check in desk, just hand them your credit card and receive your room key, etc.
26. Better not to go directly to the room from check in unless meeting a valet.
27. Valet park your car if nearby, lighted parking isn't available.
28. Don't charge to your room. Use a credit card.

And the list goes on...and on.

One of our new and exclusive cocktail lounges had a bout of drugged drinks. It happens everywhere. A friend of mine now orders a beer (unopened) or unopened Perier.

It's unfortunate that we live in such a violent world. That is the reality. Even online activity is a danger. Never leave a door unlocked, a window open, or personal information in public. There are no friends online; anyone can fake a persona here. Sometimes we forget; I know I have on occasion. Joe's post and the futility of the invention woke me up again to the reality of, repeating, a violent world. I'm usually very cautious so often it's second nature. I forgot to add to my list the need for excellent health and a strong body so you can run and fight back if necessary.

I agree with you 1000% and those
safety rules go for both guys and girls. If
in a parking lot wether it's the mall or a
grocery store always be cautious, it's a
shame these days you have to, when I
grew up you didn't have to worry about
such horrors...

When my stepmom was in her 60's, she visited me in Sunnyvale, California where I lived in a cute, gated complex near a lovely shopping center. She walked there to pick up a few things. On the way home, a bike went by on one side almost hitting her and on the other, a "partner" grabbed her purse and ran with it. Before he got it, she hung on. He dragged her a ways with the groceries trailing behind but she, of course, was weaker. By the time she got home, she was hurting everywhere; fortunately, nothing was sprained or broken. That was the end of her visit. She never wanted to leave the house.

I don't ever carry a purse but advise those who choose otherwise to let it go if someone grabs it, better the purse with replaceables than damage to the body. I was in a drug store where that happened going out the door; the lady let it go and was unharmed.

This thread is a good reminder, however, to stay vigilent and know that these are hard times that bring out the worst in the worst. Life itself is risky, it's just prudent to be cautious and wise for self-protection.
