| From The Power of Persuasion: I’d not even been born on the twenty-second of November, nineteen sixty-three; the day millions of people remember exactly where they were and what they were doing when they first heard that John F. Kennedy, President of the United States of America, had been assassinated. The news of such a devastating event, announced live on American television, soon rippled around the world. This wasn’t the first, or last, assassination of a President, but it was the first time anything of such magnitude had been recorded on film, thus ensuring that billions of people, for more than forty years now, have seen the impact of a killer bullet at least once in their lifetime. | I was living on a military base. My husband called from the squadron office to tell me about Kennedy. I did not believe it could be possible.
History changed dramatically. At the squadron office, they were preparing for any contingencies that might occur where they would be required to respond to protect the country if necessary. |

| I was working in Chicago on the IIT campus with IBM. I car pooled with three co-workers. We drove home without chatter, but with tears in our eyes. |

| I was sitting at my desk in the Catholic school I attended in Michigan. We were told to pray but not what it was about. The nun was crying and school was released early. I didn't find out until I got home.
My mom had TV on and was crying. The TV was on all day, and we were watching it over and over. I remember going outside into the sun to get away from the darkness inside the house. It was a very sad day and everyone was in a numb state. |

| Dear Harry, We were all afraid that day.
I was walking the stroller with my son and pregnant for my daughter. I was ignorant of politics, had not one idea of the vastness of the world. Kennedy had united many peoples with his words. It was too soon for the politics to unite.
I will never forget that sidewalk, the smell of the marjoram growing beside, my little boy smiling to be out in the sunshine.
Funny how the mind records such small things. Telelvision was not so everyday as it is now. My neighbors came out of their doors and cried right there on the sidewalk. What a sad day that changed the world.
Love, Betty |
