| I heard that someone tried to sell something on Craig''s list and was murdered.
We have been cleaning out our house and garage--selling stuff on Craig's list.
Today Dave went golfing with Dan.
Wouldn't you know a man called about an eight -foot ladder. He wanted it and he wanted it in two hours. He would not wait until afternoon, so I said, "Come and get it."
Then I thought...
Where is this ladder? Do I want to walk around seeking it with a stranger behind me?
I looked in the garage--no ladder, I went into the back yard and there it was. I sprayed off and stood it upright in the driveway.
When the man came, I told him to put the money under our doormat.
He did not get a chance to kill me.
Are you careful? |

| I guess he wasn't too much of a fiend--he did leave the money under the door mat. |

| I'm concerned all the time. I started out with D. K. Christi on the internet with no connection to my personal self. Then, when I filed the name with the state of Florida they posted everything about me and connected it to D. K. Christi available on the internet. Now, I feel exposed and angry. Once on the net, there's no taking it back. I was pretty free with D. K. Christi - posting everywhere and not worrying at all. Every wierdo knows more about hacking the internet than we know about using it. It is frightening. I don't sell anything. I give it all to Goodwill because I don't want strangers coming to my house. I had construction workers here a couple years ago, and they brought people to work off the street. Nothing is safe. Nothing. But then, it's not safe parking at a mall. It's not safe anywhere. I'm careful. That's all I can do is be careful. Fortunately, I have neighbors who watch each other. That's quite helpful. Once I had a friend who was a clammer and sort of strange looking with a broken down automobile. My next door neighbor stopped over to borrow something - to check on me! Good neighbors are the best protection. I'm more in danger daily at the school where I work. |

| I am glad I am not the only jumpy lady. He is probably laughing at how he scared me--maybe I scared him.
That 's a happy thought. |

Alice......!
You must be careful ! Don't let strangers in your house....Why are you selling on Craig's list when you can have a local garage sale ?
DK...
I agree with you...You do have to be careful. I remember one night 6 or 7 years ago here in Santa Fe , I stopped at a gas station to get gas, it was 7:00 PM , I went in and paid for the gas, after I filled it up a hispanic male about my height 5.8 was standing near the front of my car, he stated to me " You Take Me To The Bank ? " We'll me being a New Yorker and my mind is always weary, I quickly looked around to see who else was getting gas and at the same time I had my car keys in my hand ( I always heard if someone tries anything throw your keys as far as you can) I also thought to myself " Take you to the bank ! There is no bank open at 7:00 PM at night, I take him and I would never be seen again, I'm not that stupid !" So all I could say was " No Habla English," I had my hand on the car door, got in with my eyes still on him and drove off. I never again bought gas at night again ! Another thing I heard , if your in a mall lot, before getting in to your car check the back seat area just to make sure no one is hiding behind the seats, that's another trick they use..
Cheers...Joe |

| I am not afraid of people. I consider that fear is the demon. In my life I have had many hurts and harm. The fear did not save me from that. It only magnified the time. I go about my life. Love, Betty |

| Diane, Alice, all you ladies, Betty is right. Life is too short to live it while fearful. Caution always pays, but only up to a point. Predators are somewhat like dogs in that they sense fear. Get yourself a bag of oranges or onions in one of those mesh bags. Empty it and insert a can of Coke. Tie it just above the can, leaving plenty of space above for it to swing in your hand. You have created a deadly weapon but no one can ever charge you with carrying a deadly weapon. It will warn most predators to keep their distance. Go to your car with a key jutting out from between two fingers. Go first for the eyes, then the groin, then the throat. Get a small can of pepper spray and use it on the eyes. That's just scratching the surface on everyday things you can do to protect yourself. Make them fear you rather than you fearing them. In an excellent book, If You Survive, the writer said the first thing he noticed when he arrived in his company as a replacement officer was that the old veterans always were aware of everything around them. That, he realized, is why they were old veterans. Good advice for everyone everywhere. Don't be fearful, be prepared. Eyes, groin, throat. |

| Great advice.
Being disabled has made me think twice. I try to avoid a confrontation if possible. I forestall any and all compromising situations.
I used to shop for groceries late at night...then the grocery store was robbed and my check stolen. I thought, " I am glad they got my check without me there. " I go in the daytime now. |

| It isn't a boring tale at all. There was a point last night when I decided to lock my door and turn off the porch light, though. For one thing, it seems to me that if a girl is old enough to have a fully developed figure, she and her date are both too old to trick or treat. They arrived about the same time the neighborhood kids had finished their rounds and were going home to eat their loot. So did the big trucks and SUVs. One of the kids actually had a cell phone, and was telling someone on the other end which houses had the best stuff. These kids were not only older, they were leaner and meaner. they crowded th porch and shoved their bags into my doorway, sometimes taking a lingering look around. A couple of them commented on my cool stuff. I had the weird feeling they were casing the joint. That's when I decided to lock up and turn off the lights.

It's a shame you have to live a certain way today..When I grew up 50 years ago, you didn't think of such things. When I was 18 in 1966 this was in Brooklyn, NY I walked 12 blocks home one night from the subway at 3;00 AM , never feared someone would hurt me , today no way...Oh yes, that was the last time I saw milk being delivered...

This I know is a silly question, Why do some people leave their patio or porch light on at night ? I know some people in my compound who leave it on all night , is that to scare burglars away ? I always thought if you leave it off they would think someone is home ?
Cheers...Joe |
