What is interesting Joe, is that people over 60 are not in the group of those who are recommended to get the shot. Swine flu is hitting younger people.

I appreciate the concern of many who are a bit leary of being injected with the virus they are trying to prevent.
The fear factor will cause some to take it and others to avoid it. Risk goes both ways.

I was not allowed out of he clinic last year without a flu shot. Neither was my husband.

But we are not in the recommended group for the H1N1 virus, although I think Wisconsin has had more deaths than any other state.

Between the VA and the HMO I have as much chance of escaping a flu shot as I do of winning the lottery. As for trust, if you don't trust the people you go to for healthcare, who do you trust? Nearly everything you do depends upon trusting someone. I never give it a thought, just do what the people in the best position to know about anything say to do. That includes doctors, auto mechanics and any other experts in their field.

I for one do not trust it. i do not think i can trust it.
It hasn't even been tested enough. Even if it is FDA approved I think that it is dangerous.

I have asthma. I rather die from some incureable illness that obliterates the human race than put something in my body that could actually really kill me.

Choose your poison, basically.

I am sanguine about such things, figuring someone must know what they're doing. If the doc says take this shot its kind of like hearing a squad leader say, "In five minutes we're going to charge across that field ahead."
So you say, "You can't be serious. There're machine guns at each corner and between them guys with rifles and machine pistols and you want me to go running across that field?"
"We're all going to run across that field."
"Well OK, somebody must know what they're doing."
So off you go across the field or start rolling up your sleeve to take the shot. Everything you do in life is a crapshoot so you just hope you don't roll snake eyes.

Dick,
Except for the military and doctors, I'm wondering if you have taken orders so freely from anyone else.
I think we're all programmed - brainwashed about certain things and just go with the flow. When it comes to choices where I must decide something that concerns my life, my welfare, I want it to be my decision. If the doctor makes an "ops," it's a mistake that can cost a life, but not something one can normally evaluate as a risk. I cannot determine in advance that my plane will crash or that someone drunk will run into me and therefore go with the flow with the risk. I want a second opinion if/when my life is on the line. One doctor's opinion isn't good enough. Medicial opinion changes constantly. What they recommend one day is reversed the next. There is no safe haven and no sure thing, but I want to make the decision in matters where I have a choice.
"Doctor, do I have a choice?"
"No."
"Okay, let's do it then.

That was interesting information, Marie.

I have mixed feelings, but I do agree with Dick about the crapshoot part. The older I get the more I believe that. I don't ask "why" about illness anymore, just go with whatever seems to work. I almost died from negligence of one medical professional, but was saved by other medical professionals going above and beyond.

When traveling we have often been required to get shots and vaccinations depending on where we were going.

Smallpox was eradicated with a vaccine, and polio has almost been eradicated, so the final version of those vaccines have provided life for lots of human beings.

My husband got his first flu shot last year because the nurse said he needed to do so to help protect me, so he did. That was just one of many things he did to help save my life.

This past March I got a regular flu shot, I was
ill for three weeks , that's why I'm very concerned
about this one ! Three years ago I was told I should
get a pneumonia shot, we'll hello, it only protects you
against one type of pneumonia......The peculiar thing
is I've had pneumonia twice, once when I fell and broke
my right ribs...

Cheers..Joe

The VA clinic told me they would have the vaccine in early October. When they receive it, they will call me and I will be there before they hang up the phone with my sleeve rolled up.

Anyone remember the Hong Cong flu? I had it and nearly died. I even prayed to die because I was so sick.

If there is a vaccine for any kind of flu, I want it.

Yes, there are many strains of the flu virus. Getting a shot does not mean you are immune to all of them, but at least there is the chance of some protection.
There are shots to prevent pneumonia, unfortunately my brother-in-law who had the shot, died of pneumonia while in the hospital. There is no sure thing, but precautions are still the way to go.

I got this info from the Red Cross. I think this is what the flu shot is trying to avoid:

Pandemic Flu Preparedness:

Make sure that you have your Disaster Kit ready to go. In a pandemic flu outbreak we may need to stay home and away from large crowds of people. By having our disaster kit stocked and ready we can stay in our homes for a longer period of time by sheltering in place.
Keep extra medications and nonprescription drugs on hand if possible.
Store health and cleaning supplies, such as bleach, tissues, a thermometer, soap, alcohol-based hand sanitizers, etc.
If you become sick stay home from work.
Find out your child’s school plans for a flu pandemic.

Pandemic Flu If Someone Gets Sick:
Designate one person as the caregiver.
Keep everyone’s personal items separate.
Disinfect doorknobs, switches, handles, telephones, toys, and other commonly touched surfaces.

Swine Flu Facts/Resources:
Swine Flu has similar symptoms of regular human seasonal flu. The symptoms can include: fever, lethargy, lack of appetite, coughing, runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Other Resources on Swine Flu:
http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/key_facts.htm

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3032619/#30421136
http://www.channel3000.com/health/19299209/detail.html

People that are sick may want to consider getting checked by there physician sooner than they normally would if they were sick.

I had pneumonia as an infant, and have had some pretty serious bronichal infections over the years. In about 2005, something changed and I ended up with pneumonia three times in two years. I have now had the pneumonia shot. I have also had the flu shot every year since that nasty time, except for last year when I got too "busy" and didn't get there. This past March I was sick with the flu and a wracking cough for two weeks and gave myself a good talking to. My flu shot is already booked for the fall.
I get cranky when I get sick, and don't like to inflict that on anyone. bounce

I believe the flu shot works, but I never take any medicine if I don't have to. I stay away from headache pills and flu/cold pills. I think that the body will get used to the support of medicine and this may affect the body's natural immune system. I drink fruit juice, eat lots of tomatoes and put more garlic in my cooking.
