Soon, I hope. I need to lay in a cache of snake oil. The stuff ain't cheap. It is terribly expensive . Stupid me fell for the Icelandic rubbish advertised on TV. I no more than got it than they called to see if I wanted more of it. I said I would call them if I needed more-- only trouble is, I need less not more. I wish the fish oil companies would go belly up! |

But you don't squeak, do you? Great story, Lane. Reminiscent of Neil Diamond's "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show". I think what sold a lot of that snake oil was the fact that it was almost pure whiskey! |

| Remember Hadacol? Twelve percent alcohol labeled as preseratives. The old people were living it up, really enjoying life, and then the government spoiled it all by revealing the contents. People who said they'd never drink an alcoholic beverage went back to being glum and sour. A decade later I took a job selling drugs. Lasted six months and went back to newspapers. The leading product of the company was a diet pill. At every doctor's office the women were lined up for their regular supply. A couple of years later it was banned. The main ingredient was methamphetamine. I don't know if anyone lost weight taking it but there sure were a lot of happy, carefree women around. Kind of makes you wonder, doesn't it? |

I grew up in that era and it was the cure for everything, especially pretending to be sick when you didn't want to go to school. During the 1930s everyone enjoyed the Our Gang (Little Rascals) shows because their basic actions were typical of what little kids did at that time. Now they could be used as an accurate portrayal of small kids during that era. |

| My grandfather had some strange looking plants near his smokehouse. He said they were castor plants, and he showed me some castor beans, which he said were used to make castor oil. I remember a Saturday cartoon at the "Kiddie Show," the Saturday children's day at the local theater, where my brother and I spent a whole fifty cent piece between us, getting in and eating whatever junk we might want, watching cartoons, serials, and double-feature westerns. Anyway, this cartoon had, was it Little Lulu?, having to drink castor oil as punishment for some venal childhood sin. I was glad my grandfather didn't sell those castor beans.
