There seems to be a great reluctance to accept that books published by the print-on-demand method have to be sold primarily through the efforts of the authors themselves. DT has given excellent examples of self-publishing successes that have been achieved through the efforts of the authors themselves. They didn't spend money promoting and then sat back waiting for sales to materialise; they went out and sold the books face-to-face.
Spending money on promotion alone will produce more sales but the costs will never be recovered.
POD published authors have to make a decision about what the purpose is when investing in promoting their own books. If you want to build a platform, increase readership and eventually gain a lucrative publishing contract, it might be money well spent. If you just like the idea of more books being out there for the public to read, then spend your money wisely, otherwise you will end up out of pocket.
