| I read on FB that Sarah Palin said: “Obamacare has already made people less responsible for their health. Like, if you don’t want Limes disease, then don’t east so many Limes. Is that so tough?” (Fox News 6-18-2014)
I think that she is giving Dan Quayle some competition for saying dumb things. See: http://politicalhumor.about.com/cs/quotethis/a/quaylequotes.htm |

| About beating a dead horse. There are no real qualified candidates willing to run. Those willing to run and bare their personal lives need an alternative reason - acquisition of personal wealth. Now, many people pursue their careers based on acquisition of personal wealth. However, our elected officials use our tax money as their ladder.
A qualified candidate would not be putty in the hands of big money and wouldn't get a chance. |

| Well said, Don. Why would anyone in his/her right mind want to put themselves through all the hell to get elected? I don't think they do it for money, but rather for prestige. It takes money to get elected in America and that comes with payback obligations. The exceptions are rare as with the election of Jimmy Carter, a peanut farmer. Seldom does an American President have good educational credentials. Americans are drawn to good looks and a salesman. Intelligence does not seem to be a significant factor. When a Quayle or a Palin is even on a ticket to run, it speaks loudly. Strange as it is, it seems that many of these idiot wannabees are drawn to the Republican ticket. JFK was intelligent and that showed. Charisma was also a drawing card. It is sad when a country proclaims to be the biggest and the best that they place a less than qualified candidate on the ballot. GWB had a low IQ and that was reflected in his speech and actions. Obama has a good education and his speech reflects that. He can talk extemporaneously and make sense. GWB and Reagan relied on carefully written speeches. Anyone who has done public speaking understands the difficulty of speaking off the cuff. Why don’t University Professors run for President? Perhaps they are smart enough not to. In normal government jobs, the applicant must go through a series of tests. Why not the top job? |

| It harks back to this thread, "Is there a cult of ignorance...?
Americans tend to be anti-intellectual overall. College professors are viewed with suspicion. We are a nation of "common" people who work for a living. Intellectual "airheads" need not apply. We do not value education enough to pay out the costs in taxes, so why would we elect a president based on her intelligence?
We still believe inside that God grants wealth to the individual who works hard and lives by His laws. That makes us easy prey for the corporations, because we are in awe of their wealth. |

| Very well put all postings here. I agree about the thread regarding a cult of ignorance. It's so refreshing to be with people who have ideas and are not caught in the rhetoric of the commentators.
It's so discouraging to have good friends who say "stop" the minute you question their source. "We agree to disagree on this issue" stops the conversation dead before it begins when they know their facts are weak.
So, at our age, we compare notes on insurance plans, physicians, health and fitness matters, the latest book and the weather. |

| It is still my contention that the campaign system in this country is currently contributing to the ignorance. Campaign reform and term limits need to be implemented. It will take a referendum as no politician is going to do anything to reduce his or her chance of re-election. Both do just that.
That's why no business is done in Congress. Don't do anything and the worst can be said is that you didn't do anything. Fight everything and the best can be said is "he's a fighter - he never gave in." What a bunch of B.S. |
