| 5/18/2014 I almost threw up when I read this, being a former New Yorker I couldn't believe the 9/11 Memorial Museum would have a Gift shop selling 9/11 trinkets, many of the families are outraged, check this out... http://www.911memorial.org/catalog/gifts/bookmarks I find this repulsive, offensive, insensitive, outright disgusting.. Joe.... |

| 5/20/2014 The idea is it's a memorial museum, shouldn't be like other museums, also found out they charge $24- to get in , no museum in NYC charges this not even the Met where I use to work, if you gave a dollar donation that was acceptable. Cheers..Joe.. |

| I think it's even tackier that the Holocaust museum has one. Are you outraged about that?

LC..
Any Museum that's a Memorial Museum, a gift shop is tacky... Including the Holocaust Museum, these Museums are making money off of dead people. Matter of fact I read in this month's Readers Digest about a Jewish couple from PA. who helped 50 children escape Hitler's Germany, a great touching story, I don't know why this was never told before, it happened in 1939 .... Cheers..Joe |

| I was a member of a volunteer group in my home town that, among other things, ran a gift shop at the local hospital. The proceeds from that shop were given back to the hospital for equipment, and allowed it to provide services that it couldn not have provided otherwise.
The Audie Murphy Museum in Greenville, Texas has a gift shop which sells, among other items, copies of my book. It is staffed, like the rest of te museum, with volunteers, and all proceeds, again, go to the museum so that it can continue running.
This is typical. The proceeds from such shops are there to help fund the services provided.
The content of shops like the Holcaust Museum and the new 9-11 museum ought to be kept in good taste, with consideration given to the feelings of the survivors, but the shops themselves are an important part of funding. |

| Unfortunately everyone's sense of good taste varies. The costs of running museums seems to be high. Around here, they are staffed by volunteers yet always have big fundraisers. The gift shops are a major income producer for them.
I guess my best thought is that those who are offended by the gift shop need not enter. As for the entry fee to those museums that commemorate losses such as the Holocaust museum and the 9/11 museum, the entry fee should be nominal and waived for those without the funds. I thought they raised a lot of money to build the museum. |

| Costs of building and costs of continued operation are two different things. Heating/cooling, electricity, maintenance, paid staff members to oversee volunteers; it all adds up. |

| 5/21/2014 I still say it's "tacky" charging $24- 9/11 Museum is a disgrace. They didn't need the gift shop, it's just another way too rip off the public. And I bet who ever is in charge gets a huge salary, staff minimum wage. It should be what you can contribute to not what they demand that's how the Met Museum works, last year there was a big scandal at the Met, they found out the cashiers were giving the general public sob story oh we charge $12- to get in , in order for the Met to survive, that was a big lie, not many people know way above the cashiers is a sign saying what ever you can contribute. They also have so many shops in ] the museum plus a restaurant, the city of NY pays for the security and electricity that's the deal they have, oh yes the cashiers were fired. Plus they millions of dollars from wealthy patrons, so their not poor..... Cheers.. Joe.. |
